Catcher in the Rye : Appropriate for 12 year old ?

Having a BIG difference with x-partner over the book I gave my son that I enjoyed at around his age .
She says he is not emotionally ready for the book . He is an intelligent and very advanced reader having just completed the Lord of the Rings.

What are your views?

I had to read that book at school at 13 so no I don't think he is too young. I hated taking every page to pieces and writing reviews of each chapter. My English teacher killed it!!

I had to read and study it at school when I was 12. I loved it, still do!
