Birthday presents for DDs teen friend?

DD has been invited to a birthday dinner for a girl in her class who is turning 16. DD is new in the class and has never really spoken to this girl and so is unsure about what to get her. DD was thinking perhaps a gift certificate for an online shop she likes but then thought it was too impersonal, especially as the shop doesn't send cards, just emails a print-out.
We're willing to spend around 30 pounds or so and DD might add to that with some of her own money.

Any suggestions on a good present?

£30 plus sounds quite a lot to me. £20 tops if it was a close friend. Can your daughter check with others what they are buying? Perhaps a gift certificate with a small present (T-shirt/smellies/chocolate) as well.

Thinking about it DD could give the gift certificate with a comment about we haven't had a chance yet to get to know each other better yet but I know you like this online shop. It does show she has thought about it

Think £30 is a bit much. Don't want to look like you're trying too hard. Gift certificate sounds nice.

DD can't check what the others are buying because she doesn't really know this group of people at all. She's quite unsure about what this girl would like as they have really only had one or two conversations (she finds it a bit odd that she was invited but thought it would be rude to decline the invitation).

Chocolate and a gift card sounds good - we can't do a t-shirt because DD has no idea of what size to get.

Everyone seems to be shocked at 30 quid!
We live overseas in a fairly expensive country at the moment so it wouldn't buy all that much really, although maybe we'll lower that amount a bit...

Does she have an I pod/ I pad ? I tunes gift card if she likes music/films/ books and then maybe something small

If where you live is expensive then 30 is fine in the uk it is quite a lot for a gift what about the voucher and perhaps a nic photo frame the girlcan maybe put a picture of her birthday dinner in it.

Inexpensive small gift to open with voucher enclosed? Hair accessory quirky necklace that seem like her style. Or something fun like a huge birthday badge and helium balloon for all those selfies plus the voucher.
