Spending £40/month for a club DD barely goes to

Competitive swimming, she's supposed to do 12 hours training/month, she does 4-6 max in last 8 months. I believe that she enjoys the status which explains why she strops ridiculously if I suggest switch to just once a week membership. Equal size strops about quitting altogether.

I have zero persuasion skills. Still wondered if anyone had had this with a teen or preteen (DD is almost 13) & did you find a way to motivate them?

(Definitely no bullying, social, physical or SN problems). Ta.

You can't motivate them to do something they really don't want to. I'd just cut the membership down to weekly then tell her. You will have the same short burst of strop and save money ;)

I would say I'm happy to pay if she's doing the training she's supposed to do. If not then its once a week. Give her the choice and a week to decide. If she says she wants to do the full training then she has to follow through - if not she has to reimburse you from her own money.

Ta, she doesn't really have the money to reimburse me, iyswim!
But I think we may have found some leverage (offer of a phone upgrade in return for change to once a month).

Teenagers do my head in.

Sounds like a good and workable compromise.

I only shell out large amount of money for recreational gymnastics, because DD2 loves it, never misses a week unless she absolute has to, practices at home and clearly continues to learn new skills.

Unfortunatly, three hours a week is the minimum that seems to have any effect on improving swimming. I had a year at Uni when I could do three lunch times, I actually got quicker (I am not a quick swimmer). It really isn't worth paying if she isn't interested.
