How does your teenager EARN money?

DD will be 16 in September. DS is 14. They're both DESPERATE for money all the time. At 14 I had a Saturday job in a toy shop but there don't seem to be the jobs these days.

What do teenagers do to earn money. DD does a bit of babysitting but its not enough.

At 16 your dd should have her NI number through so she could apply for shop work.. waitressing etc
Both my dds work around their A levels dd1 works in a large hotel/abbey waitressing and dd2 works in top shop.

I know they were both desperate to earn their own money from about 14 but all they could do without a NI number was paper rounds and baby sitting type jobs.

Paper round about £12 a week
Pet-sitting in holidays about £10 to £20 a week

ds 14 has paper round every weekday morning £10 p/w it only takes him 30 minutes and he has weekends free.

also he occasionally cuts my dsis grass when her dbf away as she has dodgy leg- gets £5

my nephew used to do car washing £5 p/h

a few years ago two 16 year old boys posted leaflets through saying what kind of things they would do e.g. shopping, babysitting- especially older dcs in holidays, looking after pets when people away, dog walking, decorating, odd jobs.
We had them to do some garden bits and bobs and a bit of fence painting at our rental property. they got loads of jobs from it. Could they try that?

Dd1 has Saturday job in the library

I did a waitressing job on Saturday and Sunday nights and worked in a department store during the weekend days. It was heavy going sometimes but I was bloody rolling in cash for my age.

Once a week paper round. Gets about £8 a week.

Weekend paper round and he stands in for others on holiday during the school holidays. He was desperate to earn more money so I doubled his pocket money to £10 if he hoovers, upstairs once a week and downstairs twice a week shedding Collie

DD1 at 15 does some tutoring for younger children and gets about 10 euros per hour for it, but often the lesson will only be 60 or 90 minutes long so she's not exactly getting rich. She does that once or twice a week after school.

DD works at Nandos and now that she's 18, she also works in a bar. She works damn hard and earns just from Nandos, £70 or £80 a week. Obviously, as she's older now, her minimum wage has gone up though.

There are jobs out there for 16 year olds, if you're prepared to spend an entire day applying! Look at Indeed.co.uk. You can upload CVs and covering letters, but the endless aptitude tests are a bore! Be prepared for her to have to answer lots of daft questions!

You will need a big peice of paper to make notes of the various passwords you'll have to make too. My advice would also be, to open a gmail account and use it only for applying for jobs. It just makes it a bit easier to keep job appplications coming to one place.

This is where my summer born DS1 is at a disadvantage. Not 16 for a whole 12 months whereas his mates with September birthdays will all be able to start looking for jobs then.

For those with DDs - do you not mind them having a paper round which means they're out on the street on their own? (Especially in winter when it's likely dark?)

I only ask as I was desperate for a paper round when I was a teenager but I was never allowed because my parents weren't keen on me being out on my own like that.

I don't hold their beliefs but I wonder how common it is?

In answer to the OP - I didn't get a job until I was 17, when I worked as an admin girl at the local hospital records dept on the weekend.

We're paying the teenager next door 20 quid to call in once a day and feed our cat while we're on holiday.

DD(15) does coaching in her sport and babysitting.

DS(13) does the occasional babysit when DD can't do it - we are always next door and he is quite mature and sensible. He won't be able to coach his sport (would be too busy training anyway) so I'm not sure what he'll do as he gets older.

I did babysitting and had a Saturday job in a shop back in the Dark Ages!

I used to do loads of babysitting when I was 13 or so, had lots of regular clients; I also worked in cafes but I guess that is a lot harder these days.

Car washing? I would love someone to come and wash my car .

DS2 works with his dad, DS3 works less with his dad, and also has a paper round. DD has a Saturday job in a cafe after doing her work experience there. She also babysits for people.

What DS3 also used to do was wash cars. He got the proper equipment, including a chamois cloth and charged £5 for a normal size car and £7 for a large one. He'd do inside and out for a tenner or for £12.

Ohhh...how my 16 year old would love a job..but its all on-line now!! loads apply...I can't afford to keep up with the money he wants...to do things..

I meant on-line applications..you can't just go and present yourself...and give CV in....

DS 14 has had a job in print media distribution since he was 13. Takes him 30 mins mornings a week - we are both larks anyway and up at 6 - and he gets paid £12 a week.

DD 17 has worked in various fashion shops since she was 16 and she loves it. She works about 12 - 18 hours a week around VI form college and takes home £400 - £500 a month.

There are loads of jobs where we live and all my DDs friends work, even those from exceptionally privileged backgrounds.

DS just bowled into local newsagent and asked for a job. DD applied online for all the shops she fancied working in and took her pick.

My dd (17) got her first job last summer after seeing it advertised on twitter! When that finished at the end of the summer she applied for a Saturday job in a pharmacy after seeing it advertised in the window. She has just finished that job and now works in a supermarket as the pay is much better. She also works at an after school club. She used to work there for free for her DofE and they offered her the paid job when she finished. Nearly all my dd's friends work. The ones that don't (usually because their parents won't allow it) are ribbed a bit for sponging off their parents!

From 14 both delivered the free paper once a week (although tha's been stopped in our area now - don't know about other parts of the country?)
From 16 ds worked in the local butchers shop - an hour after school x 4 dayts a week and 6 hrs on a Saturday

ds (now 18) has been working in a shop in the City Centre for the last 6 months or so.

My dd age 15 works as an assistant in a pet grooming/ boarding shop. She is responsible for cleaning, feeding and watering all the approved dogs and cats. She has had this job since age 14.
