Should we worry that our children may love Beyonce?

If I understand correctly, Beyonce is considered the biggest female singer at the moment. The UK media mostly talk about her in positive terms.

I sometimes listen to her music and admire her vocal. However, I did not pay attention to her lyrics - until now. And I was shocked to read the lyrics of one of her famous songs, Drunk in love, which is all about sex. And there are quite a few similar songs in her repertoire.

Do you think it is bad for those children who may love or idolize Beyonce?

most songs are about relationships love and sex really it is really up to you if you allow your children to listen to pop music could be much worse could be rhianan

It's always been the way. My mum was shocked when she realised what Diana Ross's Chain Reaction was about.

They can sing about what they want and through the magic of the off button, we don't actually have to listen to it.

As long as children are getting other messages in the rest of their life, I don't think you need to get paranoid about one source of crap message. Plus, children can listen to things without any actual understanding of why the message is a problem, because they don't have anything to connect it up to reality.

The constant drip-feed of images bothers me more than words do, as I don't think the brain has to filter them the same way, so builds up a picture of 'how the world is' without being conscious of it, whereas if they think about song lyrics enough to be affected by them, they will probably be alert enough to think 'Yuck'

I remember not hearing the words ot BLurred lines thinking oh what a catchy song took me a few listenes to think WAIT A MINUTE

I agree with AMUM it is the constant images children can be exposed too least we can turn music off,

I was all into opera when I was 14. La vie de Boheme, which was my favourite, contains a detailed discussion (in Latin) as to whether Rodolpho has or will penetrate his newfound mistress. I don't know how much it has corrupted me: I will admit that I have had penetrative sex (2 dc to prove it), but I couldn't tell you whether Puccini is to blame or not.

One of the highlights of dd's junior school years was attending a school concert and hearing 60 sweet little 9 yos singing "I get high with a little help from my friends". For some reason, the Beatles were considered more innocuous than these modern artists. I have not spotted any propensity towards magic mushrooms in dd, though.

My daughter listens to Scandinavian Death Metal. Other than wanting a pet Viking and who could blame her it doesn't seem to affect her personality or behaviour in any real way.

Songs are - and always have been - written about sex because sex is what a lot of people (including most teenagers, let's be honest) are thinking about, not the other way around.
Listening to some of the songs I liked as a child, as an adult I'm sometimes shocked at the innuendos that I had no clue about at the time. Oh My Dog, have you ever listened to the Grease soundtrack?
Some people might use song lyrics as an excuse to do what they probably would have done anyway, most won't.

cory When I was in high school we weren't allowed to have that song as our Senior Class Song because of that line. 25 years on, I'm still bitter. Especially as the class ahead of us had Guns n Roses 'Welcome to the Jungle'...

She strikes me as a pretty good role model as far as popstars go. There are a lot of songs around at the moment with much less subtle lyrics than hers (I'm rubbish at remembering names of songs, or I would provide examples!!)

At least it's not Rhianna. "I like the way it hurts"? FFS.
