Teenage boy advice/girlfriend related

My son is 16, 17 in the summer. He's a great kid but is pretty secretive. He sent a text last night from his friends to say he's got a girlfriend and I'm not to make a big deal of it (as if...). I asked him about it later to his face, in a round about disinterested kind of way so as to not make a big fuss, and didn't push him into telling me, just asked him her name ffs, and he made such a commotion, walloped his sister (who dared to look vaguely in his direction).
I remember being very embarrassed about this sort of thing. But I didn't ask him to bloody tell me in the first place. I'm hurt by his reaction, as he became angry and sullen, and am just going to leave things as they are and wait for him to tell me if he wants to.
Anyone had a similar situation?

That sounds awkward for you.

I haven't had that problem. Ds1, now 18, has had girlfriends from aged 11(!) and has always loved introducing them to us, and talking to me about them.

Even DS3 aged 13, who has has a girlfriend for several months, will answer questions and talk about her, even though he doesn't initially start a conversation about her and is much shyer in general.

Hopefully, in time, he'll find it easier to be more open? Although if he's secretive, it clearly doesn't come naturally.

Yes I hope so. I really feel very sad about the whole thing, and want him to be able to talk to me about anything.

Why don't you just write him a note. I used to that with my son and tell him I was there for him but I wouldn't bring the subject up. Now after 2 years his girlfriend is great fun and I love having her round but he was quite awkward at first.
