Since when did teenage girls get so LOUD?

I swear we never used to be this giggly. The last few times I've been out shopping I've run into gangs of shrieking, hysterical teenage girls in the aisles and I'm just flummoxed.

Am I being miserable or have girls always been like this? Grin

Mine are like that, and I've got 3.5 of them (DD4 is 10 going on 15!)

My experience is the real worry is when there's a gaggle of them and they go quiet...

BrianTheMole · 18/01/2014 22:39

They've always been like that.

I'm fairly sure they've always been like that! I wasn't like that as a teen, but most of the people my age in my school were Hmm

They have always been like that.

I was like that and I was relatively quiet as a teen. You have just had the misfortune to tune into the noise Im afraid.

Ladyfarquhar · 18/01/2014 23:26

Teenage boys are just as loud if not more so. It just so happens they don't hang around shopping areas. Just kitchens and living rooms of friends.

As somebody who was on the outskirts of the crowds in the 1970's I can assure you that they were just as loud and giggly then. They just didn't hear it. You have to be outside the group to hear it.

Its the arrogance that gets me. And the insolent rudeness to adults.

About 1960 apparently.

DD came home with an award from school this week. A certificate, given to her in assembly with the words: LOUDEST STUDENT OF AUTUMN 2013 on it. Shock

Loudest student at a big inner London girl's comp.

Beamur · 25/01/2014 19:11

It's nothing new.
My Mum used to say she could hear my friends and I on the way home before we even got into our street...
But the rudeness/insolence - I think it depends on the teens you know. Most of the teens I know are actually nice and polite! I even have a few as fb friends...(and they asked me)

FernieB · 26/01/2014 08:15

Yes they have always been loud and giggly. I have DD twins (13) and they are fairly loud and giggly just themselves - it gets worse if you throw in friends as well. They don't realise as they are so caught up in their little world.

I don't generally find teenagers to be rude just a bit self-involved which is fairly normal at that age. They often don't notice that they might be blocking the pavement/shop etc but if I ask them politely to let me through they are always polite as well. They do get a bit arsey if adults tut and moan at them to move but who can blame them for that.
