headphones advice for 14 yr old DD

She chews them, she loses them, she breaks them, she's infuriating with them.Now she is using DS (11) ones which isn't ideal and he wants them back.She doesn't want the earmuff type more the buds that go in the ear.She had an apple pr which my husband gave her, she just chewed through the cord.She has had cheap ones, not so cheap, mid range ones.I am loathe to get her anything decent but she does need a pr as she listens to a lot of music!

What would your teens recommend? They can be part of her xmas present.She is listening to mostly Indie music at the moment and she likes Dubstep too.She listens to a lot of everything really, she is like her dad with eclectic music tastes.

Why is she using your DSs pair? They belong to him and unless he has said she can use them, she shouldn't have them. I would take them straight off her and give them back to DS.

Not sure about types of headphones - they all seem pretty much the same to me. If she keeps chewing them/losing them, then she should replace them herself or she goes without.

She does have them with his permission , she just uses them a lot and when we go out as a family in the car, he obviously uses them as he plays games on his DS.She has taken them without him knowing as well and we have taken them straight off her.She doesn't get pocket money/an allowance .

I would only buy cheap ones - earphones aren't that expensive - most pairs I have are around £5. However, I do understand that this may be a lot if you are on a very tight budget and each pair doesn't last long.

At 14 I think she needs to be getting pocket money/allowance so that she can budget her own money and learning the value of stuff. Then she is responsible for buying her own headphones.

My ds1 has the dr dre ones.
However, he paid half and he looks after them. They go in the case when he has finished with them, and he doesn't chew through them

If she isn't looking after them, I would get the cheapest ones I can find. Tbh though, I would also be introducing pocket money so if she breaks them, she replaces them.

It isn't so much the money, although that is a factor it's more the looking after stuff or not! It's the attitude , but this has been the longest she hasn't had another pair and I think she is learning.

I got a pair out of the pound shop and they're actually OK.

Second the pound shop, but she would be buying them herself. My six year old pays for broken toys that he breaks on purpose. At 14 I'd expect her to step up, especially as its happened repeatedly. I don't understand how you expect her to stop if you just buy her knew ones when she chews through them. She hasn't exactly gone without if she is using her brothers?....or am I missing something?

I've Got some no fear ones from sports direct. The lead is fabric coated not rubbery stuff. I wonder if that would survive chewing better? (if she must chew them!) They were about £5 or less I think.

Just checked online and they are £3.99 and in a few colours.

I'm like your DD and not purposely get through headphones incredibly quickly but 2 pairs for 1 pound at the £ shop does me nicely.

BTW if you can hear the 'music' when she's using them, she's blowing out her hearing and will be partially deaf by 25, like so many others.

Pound land do a good range of headphones we have got a cat that chews headphones constantly I buy loads at at time

Superbase headphones from poundland. I listen to lots of music (rock/punk) and they are better then alot of £10 headphones, they also last a reasonable amount of time aswell.

However make sure you get the superbase ones, they don't always have them in stock and if you buy their other ones you will be very dissapointed.

Just listened to the link I posted and I think his review is far too harsh. I have never heard the cable moving, or find the sound muffled compared to my more expensive headphones.

I wouldn't buy her anymore until that habit has been knocked on the head.

As a bit of an (amateur!) musician myself, I'd advise this.
Forget about buying expensive ones just now, but it sounds like she's on the right track with her interest in music. If she starts to appreciate music more as she gets older, (and stops chewing the cables) and particularly the varying qualities in different styles of music, I'd definitely invest in a quality set of head/earphones for a birthday present. They really can transform a song.
