Should I worry about ESs Manga obsession?

I have a 16 year old son who is now at college doing Creative Media Technology, which includes a module on games animation. He is a bit of a geek, which is fine by me, but he is obsessed with drawing manga characters - all girls with big eyes and school-girlie skirts! He speaks great Japanese and is fascinated by Japanese culture and Manga especially.

I saw a documentary about Japanese men in particular recently that worried me a bit. No real harm done, I suppose.

However he brought me an exquisitely beautiful and detailed drawing this morning of a figure with hundreds of incredibly well drawn but disturbing fantastical animals, beasts and swords spewing like a fountain from its head!

The question is, should I be impressed with the drawing or disturbed by its content?! It isn't violent in any way - no blood and gore - but seems a bit Dante-ish?

Hasn't done either of my two any harm, they are 18 and 22.
There's a whole community out there that mine interact with and have huge fun, including meet-ups. There are sites to upload and share your art, and Comicon twice a year in London.
There are so many other, more damaging and dangerous activities that he could be getting into.

Perfectly within the bounds of normal. There are quite of few people in my sixth form who are similar to your son. Its a small minority of people however he is far from alone. I wouldn't be worried about him at all, if anything jealous of his drawing skills.

If anything since you have said that he also can speak Japanese and is fascinated by the culture then it is a brilliant thing, much better than many other "obsessions" he could have, and at least it gives him some motivation and is related to his college work.

Thanks all! Great to have the reassurance - don't know why I worry really - just a Mum I guess!! Goes with the territory!

...and yes, I am very jealous of his creativity!...and very proud!
