Teenagers car insurance

Just been trying to find cheap car insurance for my newly test-passed 19 year old son. He has a Ford Fiesta 1.4 Zetec

Did all the comparison websites, gocompare, moneysupermarket, compare the market etc, and found insurance for around £1100.

Stumbled across Aviva, who aren't on the comparison sites, and found it for £920. An Aviva man phoned me and discussed the policy, we added on courtesy car cover and legal expenses, and he managed to reduce the policy to £866!

Just a bit of helpful advice, I hope, for anyone looking for the same thing.

Did you add yourself on as named driver? That often brings it down again.

Wow! Thanks- My DD is about to take her test and I can't find anything less than £2000! In fact one of the quotes I had was for £8000! The car is only worth £6,500 (1.2 fiesta edge!)

The car is actually DHs (so she will be a named driver) but we want to insure DD on it so she can drive it as well. Will give them a ring tomorrow- thanks for the tip!

It is fully comp. (Might be wrong here but) I think if you only insure 3rd party, you don't rack up any no claims bonus. DS is the named driver and policy holder, and I added me and his dad on to bring down the premium a bit. The car is worth about £4500, but I don't think the car's value has much bearing on the policy price, they are insuring more for the damage the driver can cause....

I think the 'trick' is to ask for the quote online, then wait for them to phone you. Then you can ask them if it is the best quote they can do... that's what I did and it was reduced quite a bit, with the extra's of legal assistance and courtesy car added in.

Well I just did this online with DH as the main driver and me and DD as the named drivers and the quote came back as £3000! Will await a call but doubt they will be able to bring it down by that much!

BrigitBigKnickers I put DS1 on my policy as a named driver when he started lessons at 17. He passed his test a few months later.
The cheapest price by FAR was Direct Line. Around £800 and they also give him notional NCD.

BrigitbigKnickers maybe yours is more because your DD is named driver rather than on her own policy?

Not sure why it is so much more, is your DS younger?

Upthread, I meant DS is the main driver, its his car and his policy, me and DH are the extra named drivers. Car on drive overnight, work car park during day, up to 10,000 miles a year.

Fully comp frequently cheaper than TPFT, so always try both options.

No they called- if she is the named driver it costs £950 if she is the named driver then it goes up to £2000- (it's DHs car so she wouldn't be the main driver anyway.)-still cheaper than what is quoted online- seems to be better deals if you wait for them to call you.

She is younger- was only 17 in June but made rapid progress as she practises every day in our car (we currently have a learner driver insurance from Collingwood which piggyu backs the insurance we have already.)

Will look at direct line too although the last quote I had from them was astronomical- might call them instead.
