Yes. I'm 24 and I think 17 is still a child. On the verge of adult but not quite there.

Probably. I'm 35 and think of 17 as a child though I expect a very mature 17 year old could change my mind.

20s here! 17 is very much a child. You'll understand when you're older. I realise how terribly patronising this sounds, but it is honestly the truth.

I'm late 40s and yes, I view 17 year olds as children. Whether I would TREAT them as such depends on the situation (would try very hard not to be patronising to a 17 yo mother or work colleague, for example).

I think it depends on what the 17 year old is doing - do they live at home, are they at school, are they married, do they have children etc

Presuming the '96' is the year you were born, is this about you? Are you asking if a 58 year old man would see you as a woman and be interested in a relationship with you? Or are you asking if your parents should see you as an adult and not a child?

Sophie96, I'm wondering why you are asking? Is there a specific situation you have in mind or really just a general question?

To answer the question. Yes, I see 17 as a child still. I am an ancient 49 though.

Yes 17 is a child.. that is if you are still living at home, still dependent on your family for food, a roof over your head...

If you are living in your own place, playing rent, earning a living and doing everything for yourself (money, laundry, food, rent) then I would consider you an adult.

I have a 16 , 19, 20 and 21 yr old. I consider the 21 yr old an adult..JUST ..because she is away from home for most of the year and is not dependent on me. The others are still dependent.. QED still children in all ways that actually matter.

Age does not make an adult. Maturity does.

I am 49 and as I said on the other thread, I judge on what I see.

So a 17yo who takes responsibility for her own life, who pitches in around the house, who discusses things in a mature manner, who is able to see when the adults around her are in need of support and will offer that support, who organises or helps to organise any medical treatment she needs, who fulfills her duties in any job or educational situation she may find herself in, who can stick to a budget, who has realistic plan about her future, who shows that she understands what being an adult is all about- yes, I can quite happily see such a person as an adult.

If not, then not.

Yes, if my son is anything to go by - and my daughter made some dreadful decisions at 17 that she is still paying for, ten years later. I would say that she finally grew up at around 22, and my son is now 18 and slowly starting to become an adult, I can see the change. I too remember thinking that I was an adult when I was only 15, I was very wrong. Other people see you very differently and more objectively that you can yourself. It's only years later that you admit to yourself that that they can't all have been wrong.

Maybe the poster needs reminding that the age of adulthood used to be 21. I often feel it still should be.

I consider anybody under 20 a child in my own mind. It worries me when I read about 15/16 year olds and so on saying I'm mature I know what I want. Though I probably thought the same myself at that age.

this kid is either attention-seeking or has real problems, it isn't clear which as obviously you never know online. Either way, please don't rise - she has been told to seek real life help if she needs it and given pointers.
