Wish I could talk sense into DD about texting at school...

She's 17 and in 6th form, currently under performing in two subjects. I can see from the itemised bill that she is texting constantly throughout the day. Yesterday I raised it with her, said she would be better stopping this and she could talk to her Friends anytime. She said 'Yeah, I know'. I shall be monitoring this but as she's 17 I think she knows what she has to do herself and should take responsibility, I've said it's up to her if she uses it but the time is best spent listening to the teachers. Anyone any ideas with this? Short of removing the phone of course!

But, yes, confiscating the phone would be a very good idea. Not just a day, a whole week. That'll really cause a dent.

Make her pay the phone bill? Although if it's on contract it's probably unlimited texts isn't it?
Would she get in trouble for using it in class? Maybe sneakily set it on loud and ring her on it during a class so she has a bollocking off the teacher? mean mother

Unlimited texts....Phone passworded so I wouldn't be able to make it loud anyway...she'd notice and turn it down...

If you pay the bill, I'd say confiscate it too.

Presumably, you're supporting her through 6th form for her to learn and advance in life. Not to mess about on her phone during classes.

She'll be begging for it back in a week, and hopefully she'll have learnt her lesson.

Or just make her pay the bill and hope she still does ok in 6th form. Either way she'll learn. [bugrin]

Could you maybe mention it to the head of sixth form & ask them to be aware of her using it in lesson time. To be honest if she is using it during lessons the teachers should be able to catch her out at least some of the time ( I know how subtly it can be done).

You are doing well to support the school in this and they should also be picking it up. You could even suggest to them (and let your DD know) that if she does not resolve the issue herself then you will be happy for the school to let you know so that you can confiscate the phone for a week.

I've not had to deal with your situation, but I wanted to post as it reminded me that "in my day" we spent the lessons passing notes back and forth. I'm surprised that schools haven't found a way of managing this issue - but then they couldn't stop note passing either! The thing about saying that she can talk to her friends anytime is that at her age she needs to talk so much to them so I agree that you would have to limit her phone access.

or tell her that this is her only chance at education, and if she fails because of this, you won't pick up the bits.
