Illegal downloading

I discovered today that our two teenagers have been illegally downloading films and songs from a torrent (?) website.

The router has parental controls enabled, as do their laptops but they learned years ago how to circumvent them.

So of course now they've promised not to do it again, and lost their allowance for a month.

But I doubt they'll stick to it, frankly. What do you suggest in terms of enforcement? They need their laptops for school so I can't in all honesty take them away.

Depends how old they are, are they young enough to fall for a phonecall from your 'Internet provider' (a friend who's voice they won't recognise?) telling them they've noticed some behaviour and will have to pass it to the police if it continues... might spook them.

Although you have already punished them and they've said they won't do it again, I would just leave it now until or if it happens again. Pretty much all teenagers do this so they might have not realised it wasm wrong until you told them. I would also give them an opportunity to earn back their allowance in case they want to buy music and are tempted to steal again because of their lack of cash. I might be soft though!

Hello, there are many ways to go around a router my brother works for mircosoft.

You can say you have 1-2 hours to do work on the internet and turn it off. You can still have the router on while your on the laptop.

Torrentz is bad, There is always someone trying to hack into pc's and get personal info e.g paypal credit cards.

My mums got hacked into and they took £1,000. We had update to software and many pins. All because my other brother downloaded a film off torrentz, then hacked into our computer then got our I.P address/details!!!!

I keep wondering what is in it for the sites that provide the content - I mean why do they do it? It sounds as though xmas has the answer!

Thanks nasal - I'll do that.
