4th time lucky!!!
DS1 has been a decent driver for ages but fell apart with nerves in the test. Luckily this time he had a nice examiner who actually chatted to him and relaxed him and he passed.

Now of course he wants a car. He is 19 and working in a low paid job and we can't help buy him one (he paid for all his own lessons etc too) and we are looking at cheap old bangers on line.
Can anyone recommend good makes to look at, and also any insurance recommendations?

Congratulations to him, Medusa, he must be so chuffed.

DS1 passed third time. Same as yours, he was a decent driver, but in his words 'just couldn't prove it' and was getting a bit fed up.

All his mates seem to get old corsas, but he went for a classic mini. it is a proper banger, costs him a fair bit to maintain and run, but it is earning him his no claims bonus and he loves it. luckily he has a decent job so has been able to take out his own policy. It cost approx £1,600 for the first year with insure2drive (an online company, and he was 17 at the time). I know a few of his mates are on their parents policies as named drivers and Aviva keeps coming up - I was with them when he passed and was able to add him for 30 days for about £100 IIRC just so he could get some driving in until he/we could sort his own car.

Ford Fiesta's are good.

I understand that Citroen Saxo's are the cheapest to insure.

My DS (18) is insured by Co-Operative Young Drivers and has a Smart box on to monitor his driving. This was the best deal we could get - just short of £2k!

Advice - don't bother with comparison sites. Get quotes at end of month.
