Very worried about 14 yr old ds

I am really concerned about my ds and wondering if anyone has had anything similar. He has been under camhs for a few months now because he couldnt seem to control his temper and did random stupid things, disrupted classes and got into trouble most days. They were assessing him for ADHD but over the last month he has become less agressive but become increasingly paranoid and he is convinced people are out to get him. He has had quite a lot of visual hallucinations (patterns, bright colours, spiders everywhere, explosions). He says he feels like he is falling sometimes and they have just given him an EEG yesterday and he has an MRI scan at the weekend but Im really worried because although they have said that they need to rule out epilepsy, these scans have come through urgently and Im terrified that they think its something really serious. The consultant said results for EEG usually come through in about 3-4 weeks, yet we are gettin results for his next week and im worried its because they think its something serious but havent told me. Has anyone else had a child with any of these symptoms?

Wishing you and your son the very best, OP. It's good that the doctors are treating this seriously and swiftly.

ScapeGoat · 11/10/2011 12:38

Do you think it could be psychosis? I am wondering if you are thinking about serious physical illness rather than mental/emotional illness?

RCToday · 12/10/2011 23:45

Hi Koola

any news today?

hope all is going ok xx

Hi guys,

REALLY angry yesterday, went to get results at the hospital and got a consultant that HADNT even read his notes, asked us what we were there for and then said "have you got the results for the scans?" THATS WHAT WE WERE THERE FOR!!
She said there was no results through, that she would ring the other hospital (the one we went to for scans) and would phone us at home if any results, but in the meantime she would make an appointment for 6 MONTHS TIME?????

I was so annoyed because my poor DS thought that it was going to be somewhere near sorted after all the promises, and to be honest the CAHMS help he is getting is brilliant, within an hour they had arranged both MRI and EEg scans ...its just the results on the medical side that are dragging!!

My poor DS had a really awful "episode" last night, heard a voice that told him something that scared the life out of him, the poor kid thought something had happened to me and raced home in a right state, took me a while to calm him down and tell him that the voices were just his fears coming out in a different form to others ( i had a recent cancer scare and i think thats what has been on his mind too). Once he realised I was ok and we sat and talked he was fine but he its terrifying for him and im so angry that the hospital are treating it so unimportantly when the Cahms team are trying their hardest to help. Still waiting today for results but have a meeting with the doctor from Cahms in the morning so hopefully he has some news.

Scapegoat:tbh hun ive googled every mental illness known to man since this started happening, his symptoms range from adhd to epilepsy to schizophrenia even tourettes because he has started twitching a lot, but the main reason they are ruling out brain injury or epilepsy is because my dad had a brain tumour in his teens which left him with epilepsy so they have to go down that road before they can treat him for mental illness.....its just waiting for the results. YES I do think this could be a form of psychosis, but I also think he most certainly has adhd that has gone unnoticed(i took him to docs years ago who told me he was attention seeking) and the stress off all the trouble he has got himself into and the punishments he has had, that he could never ever reason with or explain has caused a lot of the problems he is dealing with now. He was a really angry child from 11 to 13, got into a lot of trouble and he got a councillor to talk to and since talking to her, the anger has gone but been replaced with all the weird visions/voices...its hard to explain because I have never known anything like this, im out of my league with it I just want them to help him and soon.

Hey Kool, thats so shocking they didnt have the results Sad

Keep strong xx

NicoMum · 20/10/2011 10:52

All I can suggest is that you keep the pressure on at the GP and hospital and involve your MP or go to the mental health / hospital trust CEO as soon as possible so that they give you some proper attention. Thinking of you x

koolaroo · 30/10/2011 14:01

Thank you Nicomum, I never thought about that. The poor kid is really feeling this now. MRI results came back ok so they think its a mental health issue but we were under the immpression that once epilepsy was ruled out, they would know what to do....and they dont. Ive had to take him to 2 appointments this week (which has been hard work when i have 2 little ones to be looked after) the first time, my son had been awake every bit of the night and was exhausted so he talked a while then we were told to come back on Friday. The doctor rang me to tell me a youth intervention worker was going to be sitting in, which i knew would upset my son as he hates talking to new people about it. When we got there there was actually 2 people sat in room...a student too!! My son was still fuming about it on Friday night, so much so he couldnt sleep despite taking his medication, he says he feels like a freak and just wants to be a normal kid again. Its heartbreaking. He is refusing to see this woman now, who arranged to come to my home and see him but I need to know exactly what role she is playing in this because I am losing patience now!!
