Duke of Edinburgh Awards - anyone doing them?

DD is just signing up for the Bronze award. Will cost us £18pm to cover 3 trips, assesment, materials etc.

Have your kids found this worthwhile? and what did they do for the Community Service bit (ideas needed)?

ds and dd1 have both done this and found it hugely rewarding and enjoyable! They even enjoyed the expeditions, though they were usually exhausted on their return. DS did his community service working in the school library at lunchtimes, dd1 works as a volunteer at an animal rescue centre. Some of their friends did things like "befriending" ppeople at an OAP home or helping with scout / guide groups. The key thing is that it has to be a regular commitment with no payment.

Thanks ellceeel. School library is good (I had thought about local library) & brownies (her brother is cub so rules that out!). It's finding somewhere local that they can get to every week. I do think it is worthwhile though, and think she will have a great time.

DH did his - he got gold, and went to a presentation by the Duke of Edinburgh (whoodedoo) at Holyrood. He loved it. Our local High School also does it, and the kids seem to get a lot out of it.

DS1 helps in the Cancer Research shop on Wed afternoonns (school finishes early). He enjoys it, and gets first dibs on new stuff and old stuff half price!
