We need a smaller printer, the one we currently have is enormous, are there any small ones that arent inkjet as he says they're prone to leaking, sticking and smudging. We dont actually print that much

Choose one from here
You can select by Use, Function or Type.
I've had a Canon inkjet for over 10 years and I've not experienced any leaking, sticking or smudging.

Do you need a printer? Printing costs 10p a sheet in our local library.

This. For bigger, non urgent jobs, you can also get it printed and delivered to you.

If you can't have inkjet you either have to give up on "small" or give up on "colour". Laserjet colour printers are always too large for a smal home office.

We decided to give up on colour and got a great small black&white laserprinter. About 3 times a year I really need something in colour and can either do it at the local library or at a Rymans store. Although that is expensive it's worth it for the reduced hassle of a simpler smaller printer at home.

shellyleppard · 13/04/2026 22:05

I had a printer but didn't use it very often. When I did it wouldn't work as the ink cartridges had dried out 😐 i use the library one instead. It was a Hewlett packard (HP) one. Pain in the rear

They’re all shit, if you don’t really really need one then just don’t do it. I really like tech, I love a gadget, but every single time I ever have to print anything I feel the need to meditate before, brace myself, take a deep breath and gear myself up for it because I just know it will have: lost connection to the printer, ran out of ink, need a head cleaning, be jammed, say it’s busy……… Every time I have to fight the urge to lob the bastard thing out a window. This stands for all brands of home printer, I have tried them all.

ForPearlViper · 13/04/2026 22:09

There's no such thing as a good home printer. They all start well then turn into drama queens.

Cross post but couldn't agree more. I have had so many but none of them seem to understand their job description.

musicinspring1 · 13/04/2026 22:16

I have tried various Canon and HP printers and agree with previous posters none of them are actually any good after a while. I also resent the need for an app and multiple steps to make them work.
there is surely a huge gap in the market here for an affordable , reliable simple printer… If I was an entrepreneur I’d be on it !!

Mumteedum · 13/04/2026 22:18

I've not bothered for years now. Old printer just about works for non important stuff but I've been thinking a small replacement would be useful.

E.g. insurance never wants to post renewals over now and I hate reading it on my phone.

There's these thermal paper printers that don't use ink. I don't know anyone that has one though. I'd be quite tempted if anyone can recommend and some are portable.

HippoStraw · 13/04/2026 22:23

Honestly a black and white laser printer is cheap and excellent. They don’t dry up, and are reliable.

likelysuspect · 13/04/2026 23:46

OK, so black and white would be ok

I cant get to a library at the smidgeon of times they are open, parking is difficult etc, there are times when unbeknown to me, a retailer I want to send something back to insists on the returns lable being printed out, like as if we are 10 years ago, plus boarding passes and things which are always 4am in the morning when we realise we need them

And yes the current one constantly tells me Im not connected or something and then about 6 months later, it will print out that returns label.

He's full of shit about inkjet printers. They're cantankerous arseholes but when they decide to print, they do it just fine. I've never had one leak.

Dbank · 14/04/2026 12:46

Totally agree about inkjet they are a PITA. Lasers work well for occasional use, I turn off the "automatic calibration" so mine (M254dw) doesn't use any tone if left in standby for months.

If I was looking today, I would want the following features

Colour!
3rd Party Toner support
Double sided
Wi-fi and Ethernet
Airprint
Up to A4

Your requirements may differ, I suggest reviewing
HP LaserJet Pro M254dw (if you can still find one)
HP LaserJet Pro 3202dw
HP Laserjet Pro 150nw

Check the cost of replacement and 3rd party cartridges.

I hope you enjoy saying good bye to the old inkjet (work of the devil)

Dbank · 14/04/2026 12:55

If you only want mono, I would look at a HP LaserJet M207dw

@Morepositivemum yep - understood - I spent ages on that page drooling over them - sad I know!

Badballerina · 14/04/2026 13:14

I've an HPEnvy 5000 - it's 6 years old - not too big and prints, copies and scans well. Maybe not the most economical long term as it's quite heavy on ink cartridges but I don't use it day in day out

ThirdStorm · 14/04/2026 13:27

I wouldn't go inkjet again so I'm team DH. I have an old Samsung printer which is great but if I had to replace it I'd go with https://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-LaserJet-150-sheet-technology-businesses/dp/B08WLSY38Q

Replacement toner is approx £23 but I think it comes with a cartridge so that should get you going.

ChillinwiththeVillains · 14/04/2026 14:18

We have a canon ts5151. It is fine, quite tidy and plain looking. Works well via iPhone or via laptop. Ink seems to last ages. Bought it new via ebay and it wasn’t too costly.

Condbottle · 14/04/2026 14:20

What are you printing? I haven't had a home printer for years. It was a bit inconvenient initially, but now I have a routine with saving things to virtual files (rather than paper files) I don't need it at all.
