iPad for a SEN child in primary

My 8yo is starting SEN school in September and he will have a long commute. I’d like to get him an iPad for the journey so he can use Maps to track his progress on the journey, also to watch stuff he likes - he has YouTube kids and bbc iPlayer at home - undecided if he needs streaming or downloading content. He wants games which we’ve been resisting but that could change. He’ll use it at home and on the journey but the school will take off him when he gets there.

We’re looking at secondhand. I’m unsure of the right balance between price and an iPad that isn’t going to become obsolete in a few years, and DS being potentially careless or upset and breaking it in a couple years.

For navigating the journey we’ll need WIFI + cellular right? Is 4G good enough or are we going to regret not going for 5G? I think 11” will be big enough. Should we get it insured? Am I asking the right questions? I’m really not very techie so any advice on buying and managing an iPad for a young boy is welcomed!

First thing, is it allowed on the transport? I’d be surprised if it is tbh

It’s common for SEN kids to have devices like iPads on school transport to SEN school. It helps them regulate and it’s often a long commute. The devices are taken off them
at school.
