Connect Mac Mini to HP monitor

Please help a technological idiot - how do I connect my new Mac Mini desktop to a HP monitor? I have connected them via an HDMI cable and both are of course plugged in at the mains. Monitor switches on but then the screen is blank.

I have a Dell monitor, so not sure it's the same, but might be. And an older Mac Mini. On my monitor, i have to press a button that scrolls through the different types of connections to find the one I am using (in my case, it's choice 2, which is lit up on the botton of the monitor).
