Changing my mind about tattoo

I am due for an appointment tomorrow for a floral tattoo. This is something that I really really really want. At the time of booking I knew what I wanted. A rose in my favourite colour. This being my first tattoo I am a little bit nervous and I decided really only a mini tattoo. Maybe something about 2 inches.

For a few weeks I was thinking about location between arm or leg and I decided arm.

Now I am getting nervous and having second thoughts. In that I wish I could get a bigger rose tattoo to go from wrist to under elbow. A rose with a stem. Do a proper job of it while I am doing it.

Would a mini rose above the wrist be nice? This is something that I do want but now I want bigger.

At some stage I think I would like to plaster a few different ones all around my body - sunflower, daffodil, daisy, buttercup - theres no concrete decision made on this one just yet and may or may not happen.

I wish I picked a bigger longer rose for my arm instead of a mini one.

Now I am thinking will I go ahead with this mini rose but maybe put in on my leg and then maybe next year I can get a bigger tattoo on my arm?

Decisions will need to be made within the next 12 hours.

Definitely have the smaller one as your first. You have no idea how your skin will react. Get a bigger one when you are sure you want a bigger one.

Yeah maybe a bigger one on my leg another time.

Why don't you have your tattoo design op? Has the artist not shared one with you?

Tattooists don't always share designs before hand. It leaves them with fussy customers wanting to change things last minute and they can't stay up all night re drawing things all the time. You have to just trust your artist. They can make modifications on the day.

Thank you for the encouragement. I did provide some reference pictures. The main thing being a rose in my favourite colour. Hopefully it won't be too small. I think I pointed to a tattoo that was about approx 3 inches in length when I booked as a guide size.

I think this post, I was just getting nerves.

All that I need to do now is decide on placement.

I think I am going to come up about 3 inches from my wrist and have the base of the stem from there as a starting point.

So it will be like middle forearm area.

When I wrote this I was having second thoughts about the sizing and thought a bigger flower the size of my forearm would be great but then I saw tattoos online like that and it would be too over powering.

Why don’t you get the smaller rose you want this time, and considering adding to it later with other flowers. Like this:

I just had a look in my screenshot folder and I found another rose tattoo design. A different one. It's one where the petals are more closed in so it looks like something from a boutique instead of petals where they bloom out. Now, seeing it, it is something that I love too.

Now I am getting so nervous.

I provided a reference picture that I really liked and I was attracted to it at the time of booking and now I see another one and it's so hard.

What if I don't like the picture/tattoo that they made for me?

This is something that I wanted for years and this isn't done on a whim. I knew what I wanted. A rose in my favourite colour.

Why am I so nervous now?

Get a nice temporary tattoo- have it on for a week
then decide if you really do want a permanent one or not
you seem very undecided at the moment

KingKitty · 05/04/2025 08:15

I loved what I provided as a reference picture and then this morning I saw a different design and I live that one too.

Maybe I am nervouse because I didn't see my tattoo design yet.

I read the OP as a choosing a tatoo between legs or between arms. I was horrified for a split second and now I can't stop giggling.
Sorry OP no constructive suggestion from me.

@KingKitty

If I were you I would cancel the appointment and wait, even just a week. Get your head around exactly what you want and where you want it because at the moment you sound very unsure.

GeorgianaM · 05/04/2025 08:37

I must admit I hate tattoos but accept they are popular for many.

What I don't understand that after all these years of people getting tattoos and reading about an increase in tattoo removal, why is there not an option to have the tattoo you want as a type of temporary transfer that you can wear for a week and see how you feel about the design and the placement before going back and making it permanent?

I think maybe it's nerves like what another poster said. Pre tattoo nerves. I haven't seen my tattoo yet and then every time I look online I see more and more. It's all just too overwhelming.

I have to say, it seems like madness to me that you haven’t seen it. You are just going to go somewhere and have a picture drawn on you that will be there forever and you don’t get to see it until right before.

I suppose you will know straight away if you like it or not when you get there. And if you don’t like it you are going to have to say you don’t like it!

This is why you have to do your homework when choosing an artist. Is it their style/interest, can they actually draw? , reviews from customers of the store not just that artist. I trust my artist and dont see designs until i get in the door. Lowers the chances of you taking their design elsewhere.

If theres something you dont like about the design, speak up, any good artist will work with you to get you where you want to be.

verysmellyjelly · 05/04/2025 09:19

I hope you love the design, OP!

I think it's more that they don't want you to go off and take their design elsewhere when they've spent time designing it for you.

Neveranynamesleft · 05/04/2025 09:31

You are not convincing me that you know what you want !

Happyinarcon · 05/04/2025 09:42

If you know you want different flower tattoos around your body, would it be wise to maybe focus on one of those instead? You might know that you want a small dandelion on your leg and feel confident getting that done, whereas the wrist arm decision is still not clear in your mind. On top of that the arm tattoo is extremely visible and you need to be certain, whereas on other parts of your body you’ll probably focus less on it

That's a very good point. I am still undecided about other tattoos and there are no current plans in place for more right now but maybe some day.

A rose would probably be my favourite and I probably would like that to be more on display.

Other flowers I am interested in are daffodils, daisies, sunflower,

Maybe I will go in and have a look and see what they have to offer me with my request and if I wish to continue put it on my lower leg instead of my arm.

I will have to decide in there. I was hearing up towards my arm as a location and I really had my mind on it but maybe I can change it to my leg.
