i personally think it's her choice and don't have a problem, but i was wondering if anyone would have any thoughts? i don't want her to regret it.(i very much do regret my first tattoo, especially since i was thirteen at the time and had my best friend do it in secret!) my local tattoo artist has done multiple tattoos for me, i trust her and she allows anyone 16 and up with parental permission. dd is thinking of getting a very small saturn tattoo on her finger so nothing major.

I took my daughter for her first one for her 16th birthday.. she's had many more since .. she's 40 and no regrets.. all beautiful or meaningful.

Blimey. Was this in the UK?

Have you thought about an ephemeral tattoo? Might be a better option at a young age when styles and ideas change frequently

What's an ephemeral tattoo?

cupcaske123 · 05/08/2024 12:29

What about a henna tattoo?

brightyellowflower · 05/08/2024 12:32

Sure because I can't think of any 40 year old women who have shit tattoos that they completely regret.

zaxxon · 05/08/2024 12:45

I don't particularly like the tattoo I got at 19, but I don't regret it. It was important to me at the time, and it's a part of my history now, a reminder of that old self who I still feel compassion for.

There are a fair few jobs out there that don’t allow visible tattoos, hands are the worst place for this. I’d advise against.

Meadowfinch · 05/08/2024 12:54

Tattoos on the hands and face are banned in quite a few profession.

The 16yo would be limiting her career choices before she's even started which is foolish. I'd say no until 18.

My husband's law firm's policy is no visible tattoos when wearing work attire so do consider what career path she may wish to take.

It's a step beyond temporary. Should fade in 1-2 years. Then after that, if you have no regrets then you can go ahead with permanent

First tattoos can always be... decisive. I would recommend that a 16-year-old should put aside trends. In my time, tribal tattoos were very popular, then they went out of fashion and people who had them were not satisfied. Therefore, I think it is important to get something that really means something and is timeless.

It's illegal to tattoo anyone under 18, so great that you're approaching artists who operate within the law! Wait till then, tattoos are for life, waiting another couple of years won't hurt.
