Tattooing over scar tissue - can anyone advise?

I’m planning a very small very private tattoo on my inner wrist and I want it over a scar from self harming years ago. It’s a simple design and I don’t mind if the scar still shows but I’m not sure what’s possible.

Also, long term I plan to keep it covered by my watch so only people very close to me know I have it but I’m guessing I won’t be able to do this at first?

Any other advice for a tattoo virgin also welcome, thanks Smile

It can certainly be done but you need a tattooist who has done it often. The older the scar the better the result, flat, white scars can effectively vanish when tattooed by a skilled tattooist.

I had a tattoo lasered off, which went wrong and I was left with a scar. I've since had the scar covered with a different tattoo - you can't see it but you can feel it as its raised. Go to a tattooist that you trust/knows what they are doing.

Your post made me remember this article - some amazing work here that makes a feature of the scar. www.boredpanda.com/scar-birthmark-tattoo-cover-ups/

I've had a tattoo over a scar and you can't see it at all. You can only feel it if you run your fingers over it but nobody ever does haha worth every penny :)

Thanks, so what would be the best way to find someone who specialises in this sort of thing?

I have tattoos over multiple raised scars. I chose the design carefully to maximize coverage and made sure I was 100% certain of the artist. They’re completely obscured and you can only feel them by running your fingers over.

OTOH, there is a checkout girl at my local store who has an inspirational quote on her forearm that then makes you notice the very thin white scars underneath. Hopefully the “I’m not ashamed and don’t care if anyone sees” is the look she was going for, because I’d never have noticed without the tattoo there.

It’ll be a couple of weeks before you’re able to cover with a watch strap.

By no means the only way and I know there are loads of really skilled male tattooists who could do it, but I’d start by looking for a female tattooist whose work I liked. The tattooist I used has a lot of custom from women wanting to cover stretch marks and csection scars, and I think women who are self-conscious about these things are more likely to go to female artists. Obviously men have scars they want covering too, but I suspect there are fewer.

If by chance you're anywhere near Norwich - instagram.com/poppysmallhandstattoo - she does loads of self-harm scar cover ups, and I love her style
