So surrogacy in the UK do people really not pay? I’m so confused! Say a friend of a friend wants to do it, I don’t know them that well and obviously would want to pay them... I can’t believe people don’t pay?!

This is hypothetical, I have one frozen embryo and am now unable to carry my own children. Just trying to get my head around this!

I'm not in the UK but I gues commercial surrogacy is illegal? As is in many countries. It's to prevent women being "bought" against their wishes to be a surrogate out of desperation instead ofbeing willing to do so. Money should not be a factor in deciding to become a surrogate.

If someone wants to be your surrogate she wsjould do so willingly, so no pay necessary.

Having said that, nobody will forbid you 20 years later to pay for the university for surrogates own children... or something else that would be nice to do.

Hello, I am new to surrogacy as a surrogate I am still waiting to find IPs and I can’t wait to be apart of an amazing journey I already have 2 kids of my own.it is illegal to pay a surro to have a baby for you BUT you can agree on expenses such as travel costs, costs for time off work needed, medication costs, childcare costs if surro has children etc etc x

I think it can be very dodgy territory especially if there is a financial imbalance. It could appear as coercion in some way.

I do think it's a beautiful thing for life long friends or siblings to offer though as it's clear their intentions are altruistic.

I am a gestational surrogate based in the uk (currently 6 months pregnant with a surrogate baby).

Commercial surrogacy is illegal in the uk so you can’t pay someone to be a surrogate. However it is expected that surrogates will be reimbursed for the expenses incurred as a result of the surrogate pregnancy - maternity clothes, childcare, travel to hospital appts, loss of earnings/partner’s loss of earnings etc. The surrogate should not be out of pocket as a result of the pregnancy - and the courts may well look at this when assessing whether to grant the parental order. Surrogate expenses can really add up and should be discussed and agreed upfront. I maintain meticulous records and receipts for all my expenses.

@SurrogacyReform

Have you asked MNHQ if you can access MN for your research? Have you paid your fee?
