Does anyone have any experience with having a baby via surrogacy ? What's the costs like? Is it ever affordable for people who aren't well off ?

Our daughter was carried by a gestational surrogate, in Canada (where the law is the same as England ie only altruistic surrogacy allowed). It cost around £180,000 in total, we worked out (including us staying in Canada for three months, plus our legal costs in Canada and back here ). Pretty spendy, and we would never be able to afford to do it again - but we think she's worth it! I understand that surrogacy costs in England are quite a lot less (we had costs of £30-£40k quoted to us) but we weren't keen on traditional surrogacy (ie surrogate's egg and husband's sperm) and at the time that was much more common here. Also the whole thing seemed quite secretive, and in Canada it's very open and accepted and regulated, which appealed to us. Good luck OP! It's a difficult journey to say the very least.
