An aquaintance of mine wants to start a family, via a surrogate from bulgaria. Bearing in mind neither him or his partner have fertility issues, more about him not wanting her to be traumatised by pregnancy or childbirth. Seems a bit odd if you ask me..

Very dodgy ground. It is techniqally illegal in Bulgaria although it was/is happening underhand so the Bulgarian government sanction surrogates from what I can gather. It also clearly states that a Bulgarian "substitute mother" as they are called there can only do it for couples with proven infertility. can't see there's anyway of getting round that as the clinic will ask for proof.

Of course you could be saying that the surrogate is in Britain but is from Bulgaria which would mean something else entirely- surrogacy in the uk for heterosexual couples can only be allowed when the couple cannot have a baby themselves, again clinics will ask for proof as will the courts when they try to apply for a parental order. Surrogacy is not an option just because you Dont want to go through pregnancy/childbirth.

Sounds so weird to me... It's kinda selfish to do so. Of course it's their own business, their lives&decisions. But as for the person who can't carry a baby because of health condition, this situation seems kinda offensive for me. What nonsense! If they worry that pregnancy may cause problems with weight or smth like that than it's the dumbest thing ever. How people can be so ungrateful? I'd be so happy to get pregnant and give birth by my own. Even though I'm happy we have an opportunity to use services of sm.

Stumbled on this thread, couldn't help but let out a sigh. A closer look at the scenario then. Your acquaintance must have a very caring partner not to want her to experience all the pain that goes with bringing a baby to the world, no doubt. I, however, wonder how far he will be able to shield her from the reality of things!
To think some women would give anything for the pain of childbirth and have to pay someone else to do it for them! If in doubt, ask around from the list of clinics fully booked by ladies unable to carry babies for health reasons.
Oh well, enough of the rant. She gets to decide anyhow.

That is truly weird if you ask me. A lot of us are trying hard to get what they are avoiding and even taking loans to pay for it. But it is a bad idea from the start because it will be pretty difficult for them to get approval if they are actually both fertile.

That was my first thought too.

She could have medical issues that she wants to keep private, and the birth trauma thing is a cover story.
