Got our escaped guinea pig back!

I just had to share this in case anyone else loses their guinea pig outside - in this case ours made a break for it while being actively supervised by 2 kids and me near to a large holly (and others) bush. I opened the run door to collect him in for the night and he took his chance. We have been used to lazy guinea pigs and this took us by surprise.

Ours went missing in our 100ft, rewilded (euphamism for shit show) garden this evening. Bloody idiot was seen climbing into a teeny hole in the fence at 5pm. At 6pm darkness was falling and we were giving up.

We only blooming well got him back!! Lured him into the run:

  • We played happy guinea pig noises on YouTube on a phone set up in the run.
  • We put the run with an opening with loads of hay in it and the bedding from him and his brother's cage so he could sniff his way back.
  • We put red and orange peppers (his favourite and "smellier" than carrots) round the entrance to the hole where he was last seen.
  • I am not actively religious but I prayed to the St Christopher fella

He's never going outside again the bugger! Wheeeeeeeeek!

Got our escaped guinea pig back!

Updating my CV as we speak. Right up there with when the Aldi checkout assistant turned to her colleague and remarked "What a packer!" I'll be dining out on this for weeks.

Beautiful guinea pigs x

I love happy endings! 😆

WomenInConstruction · 30/10/2024 05:46

Amazing! Love this!
Took me back to my childhood though, when I had lots of Guinness pigs who were free range in the day they would roam in the large wild garden and in theory could have gone miles (no fences), but just stayed in their garden.
Come evening time, I would clap as the bedtime signal and they would all come home, walk up the ramp to the hutch and I'd shut the door!
So funny to see a long line of guinea pigs all coming home.
But I can't remember how we taught them that.

@WomenInConstruction that is a great story and a lovely image!

Are they micro chipped?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 31/10/2024 19:30

Oh my goodness you must’ve been frantic Guinea pigs are lovely but so vulnerable ( and as thick as mince ). Excellent Luring Tactics indeed.

Now I’m going to say that the grey one is the culprit but the black/white one has a glint in his eye too…..

You mean "Updating my C V as they SQUEAK! ".

For what it's worth, I've kept guinea pigs for 30 years and I would love to retrain as a professional GP whisperer. My three floofballs are crunching bell pepper happily as I type. So glad your story has had a happy ending, I once had a G P jump out my hands on the day I brought her and her friend back from the rescue and she hid in my home for a whole w(h)eekend. It was a process of elimination by noticing the poop trail as to working out where she had gone!

Yours are adorable too btw! @70isaLimitNotaTarget none of mine have ever been thick, (if anything very wily) but they can be stubborn!

BirthdayRainbow · 31/10/2024 19:43

That is brilliant. On everyone part!

When my guinea pig escaped I despatched one child to ask a neighbour for help while their younger sibling took the opportunity to keep asking me for bags of crisps. Too stressed to say no!

Very, very impressed with your GP luring and supermarket packing skills. I think you need to update your LinkedIn profile too. I'm sure you'll be able to rock the relevant skills Wink

Awww they are gorgeous. Playing happy GP noises was genius, @BottlingBurpsForGrandma

It reminds me of how loudly hours would squeak every time we took a scrunchy plastic bag from the fridge, because they associated it with the kale bag being opened.

Love @WomenInConstruction’s image of her charges marching back up the ramp. Good quality of life for those GP’s.

shockeditellyou · 01/11/2024 08:24

Guinness pigs is my favourite typo 😄

Excellent GP whispering skills! Mine are too soft and haven’t been outside in a good month or so.

Ah Balonz. I say this not in a Guinea pigs detriment it is part of their charm .

I had piggies for years and my DD and I had piggies.
One of our pigs could run upstairs 😲

but we marvelled stop how they are prey animals but wheeked like Billy-o when they heard us walk down the garden with supper.

I used to say it was a good job our boars who were married were neutered as they were paddling in a very shallow gene pool 😉

Crisp bags is a good Guinea pig luring tactic.
So many times I sat down with crisps and there was a chorus of “we’re staaaarving. We can almost see our feet”.

I used to put a cover on the boys cage then they complained that they weren’t parrots

InvisibleRadiator · 01/11/2024 09:16

Well done you! This reminds me of my childhood when we took the school guinea pig home for the weekend. It was always very passive when we saw it in the cage at school, so we were looking forward to giving it a run in our garden. We placed the guinea in the centre of the grass and said "run free little pig!" But it didn't move a muscle for the entire 30 mins we were out there. Just sat still and ate whatever grass it could reach without moving.

suburburban · 01/11/2024 13:36

Our gps loved the fridge and rustling bags, they wanted to help unpack the shopping

My three are the same with crisp packets. I had one who would go crazy when I had chocolate - the wrappers sent her nuts! Them she would do the big eyes sad face when I explained to her that chocolate is people good and she could have a sugar snap pod or a carrot instead! Fortunately she loved those things so sad face and bambi eyes never lasted long,or at least not until someone was daft enough to open a mars bar in front of her!
