New kitten with dog friendly dog?

Hi all,

Looking for advice.

My cat passed a year ago but I have a small dog and they were the best of friends.

They slept together, they chased each other, played and rolled around. Dog always maintained a healthy fear of the cat as cat wasn't afraid to put her in her place and the dog never hurt the cat.

She misses the cat terribly as she gets in quite a state when there a non dog friendly cat. And is in her element and doesn't want to leave when we visit dog friendly cats.

I also miss having a cat so it's not just for the dog.

My concern is my dog would be too rough with a kitten because although she is a small dog she's like a baby elephant but equally I think a couple of little kitten claws would keep her at bay like my old cat did.

Has anyone done this? Any advice?

I just don't want to get a kitten and have to rehome her and I've seen gorgeous kittens raised with a dog.

How about a slightly older, dog tested cat?

I did think of that but I couldn't even adopt a dog from a shelter because I lived in a flat 🙈

I think they would sort it out. We have a friendly soft dog and got our cat as a kitten, introduced them gradually to eachother and after a couple of days they had established that the kitten was the boss.
They didn't sleep in the same room at night for a few months but they do now and they get along fine.
