Guinea pig not eating

It’s been four days now. We have taken him to the vet twice. The vet gave some food supplements for him to have with a syringe, painkillers by injection on both visits and some medication to try and start up digestion. She said she thinks there is a blockage. We are trying to feed him with the syringe every three hours. It’s pitiful to see him getting weaker and weaker. He can hardly move his back legs now and I am thinking today might be the day to put him to sleep. He’s five. What do you think, guinea pig owners?

Not a GP owner but an elderly animal who is weak from refusing food for five days despite vet attention does sound to be not long for this world. Don't delay the inevitable.

Back to the vets URGENTLY I'd expect them to assess and advise in PTS or admit him for treatment

If he has got a blockage then force feeding him isn't going to help. I rather think your vet is useless, to be honest

Thank you both of you. We will take him back this morning.

So sorry ro hear about your poorly piggy

Is your vet well trained in guinea pigs? Guinea pigs get gut stasis if they don't eat very regularly. That can be fatal. Has the guinea pig had any x-rays if the vet thinks it's a blockage? You've been very proactive and done all the right things. I'm sorry your piggie is so sick. How old is the piggie?

IsolatedWilderness · 15/04/2023 09:49

Sorry, I see he's five. Not an old piggie but not young either.

Thank you for your replies. Yes, it was gut stasis. They gave him some medication to hopefully get it to work again but he had to be put to sleep in the end. 😢
