New companion for elderly rabbit?

I had to have one of my elderly rabbits put to sleep. My remaining rabbit is 11 and I'm wondering if I should look for a new companion for him or if he's too old? He's Dutch, in good shape for his age and a bit of a submissive boy. His mate was the boss and much bigger than him, a year older.

I am really sorry to hear that @BeatriceLacey , I am a real rabbit person too. Could you see what a local rescue thinks? They may have a good match. How's your surviving rabbit?

Have a chat with your local rescues :)

When my little wobbly 12 year old girl was left alone when her brother died, the rescue bonded her with a gentle boy twice her size and just a year old, they were a perfect match as he doesn't have a bad bone in his body and is the biggest softy. I lost her when she was 13 and my boy was rebonded with a girl the same age, they're both nearing 5 years old now.

Thank you both. He seems okay, a bit subdued but is eating well at least. I have to go and see my parents over half term so I think I'm going to have to leave it until after that but I'll have a ring around as soon as I get back. He's a lovely boy and I don't want him to be lonely.

I think you have to consider if you're happy to keep rabbits 'indefinitely', as if you do get another and he passes away, will you get the new one a friend?

That said, I do firmly believe all rabbits should have company of their own kind. Lots of rescues have older single buns that need homes, there's a huge rabbit crisis in rescues at the moment, so I'd definitely chat to some and get their advice. They may have the perfect match for your little guy.

So sorry to hear about the passing of your other bun Flowers
