Recommend a Syrian hamster cage

Hi, we're looking to getting a Syrian hamster in the new year and I thought I'd ask for your cage recommendations.

I had a dwarf hamster as a teenager in a glass aquarium which it enjoyed.

Also, were in Herts so recommendations on where to buy a hamster as I'd rather not go to pets at home.

Thanks

There's an absolutely huge one online, which is brilliant. We had a hamster who seemed very sad, even depressed, he hardly played or got out of bed, my dd saved up and bought him the mega-cage and he was just so much happier, he ran around all the time, used the wheel, just was much happier! This is the Pets at Home version, not sure if you can get it elsewhere. The first one we had was far too small.

Hamster heaven is the one I had if they still do it, and a wodent wheel

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 09/12/2022 14:47

I’d buy a largish fish tank.

Buteverythingsfine · 09/12/2022 14:49

Ours was the Hamster Heaven one as well (the one linked is pretty similar/the same).

Nowthereistwo · 09/12/2022 15:03

Thanks for the quick responses. Glad Hamster Heaven is getting a few votes. The reviews are good but does mention about needing a larger wheel for an adult Syrian.

That cage is too small for a hamster, I'd guess most in pet shops are less than ideal. Some advice here: www.hamsterwelfare.com/cage-advice-and-evidence/ but 100 x 50cm seems to be the minimum recommended. A large tank you can fill with deep substrate for digging is better than a wired cage

I have just bought a Savic plaza which is 100x50 I think. Also a 30cm wheel as I think smaller.ones can damage their backs.

Cage advice here from a small animal rescue:
www.tinypawsmcr.org.uk/advice/hamsters/

Have you considered adopting? This place is in Herts: www.facebook.com/AuntyanimalRescue

Hi @Nowthereistwo as other posters have said, the Hamster Heaven is OK, but recommended minimum size is 100 x 50cm, so Savic Plaza is better.

What would be ideal if you have the space is an Ikea Detolf (163 x45cm) which is a popular hack. They are around £70 from Ikea, remove the glass shelves, turn on its side, and if youre not DIY minded, someone like "Kirstys Tank Tops" on Facebook can make lids to order. Google "Hamster in a Detolf" for inspiration as the space and possibilities are far better than any cage offers.

28cm minimum wheel for a Syrian Hamster to avoid back damage.

Please do try your local rescues as they're full of lovely pets needing homes and you'll support a charity rather than a corporation.

Good luck and thank you for asking for advice to keep your Hamster happy.

Thanks. We're buying a slavic off ebay and will be getting a play enclosure for them to play safely outside the cage without getting lost!

We had this www.jollyes.co.uk/zoo-zone-large-small-animal-habitat.html
We put extra wire over the top as the gaps are too large.

Beware, a Syrian is likely to chew its way out of any plastic cage!!! We had to patch ours with metal plates until she gave up!!!
You need a very large wheel.

Definitely Savic Plaza 100cm as a minimum for a Syrian hamster. The Blue Cross and PDSA have updated their care guides to 100cm x 50 x 50 minimum size cage and 20cm plus of bedding, for all species of hamster. Although the hamster heaven is still considered good for a dwarf hamster by many. There's actually a new 120cm Savic Plaza now which is a fantastic size for a hamster. It's not widely available yet - only sold at Zoar's Ark in Wales at the moment.

If it's for a female Syrian 100cm x 50cm "might" be ok but they often need much larger cages.
