Single old bunny - how to stop him feeling lonely

we had a dwarf Netherland and a Dutch bunny together. One was 9 and he died last October. We still have the Dutch bunny and I worry he’s lonely. I don’t really want another bunny at this stage. Dutch bunny is 8.5 years old and still healthy. Should I do things to keep his mind active? If so what?

Is he indoors or outdoors? Single buns are best as indoor buns, and seniors often do better indoors anyway, I know my wobbly seniors definitely did and were less destructive than younger buns.

If he can have an area where he can find people and company should he desire then he'll be happier. Lots of toys, places to hide, things to dig, would help him.

He’s indoor although I do put him in a run on the grass on nice days.

Does he seem happy? My elderly bun has previously been very depressed when he's been between friends.

Also worth noting my elderly bun is 11.5 so yours could be around for awhile yet!

I'd probably speak to a local rescue about adopting but explain the situation. Maybe a long term fostering arrangement? Or they would accept you return the adoptee in due course? They may know of someone in a similar position?
