Guinea pig absess.

Our guinea has had an absess on her bum for a few months now. She's had 2 lots of antibiotics and the vet said if she's happy she can live with it. My son has been cleaning with saline every day, at the moment its started getting pussy again. She's eating well, appears to be happy but doesn't like us touching it, don't blame her. Will make an appointment again with the vet, not sure where we go from here. She's nearly 6 years old, I don't think surgery will be a good idea. My son is so upset by it all, he is Autistic and he's consumed by her, he looks after her so well and loves her so much ❤

Poor piggie and your poor DS he'll be so worried about his pet .

Do you know what caused it ? Could she have got a bite ? Does she have a cagemate ?
Could be a self inflicted injury - not deliberate but she could be overgrooming .
Hay injury
Or maybe a cyst or lump that got infected .
Females can get tumours (mammary , ovarian ) some of my old sows had farrt solid lumps in their neck skin. (Didn't grow or cause problems )

Warm salted water (boil it add a good teaspoon of salt and cool to a comfortable temp) you could hold a cotton wool pad soaked in it onto the abscess . If there's a scabby bit this might be enough to softem it and let the pus drain.
I know that you can flush an abcess with a syringe of sterile saline but only if the vet advices and there would have to be a drainage hole

Antibiotics can have side effects on a guinea pigs gut , but often necessary to combat infection. We put probiotic powder on cucumber for them.

They're such lovely little animals and 6 is a pretty good age . They love eating so keep an eye on her appetite , its one of the first clues if they're ill ( and what comes out the other end !)
