Rabbit vaccine

Hi I was interested in a rabbit recently.
The lady said he is 6 months old etc.
She also said he has been vaccinated against mixi & VHD 1 & 2.
Next vaccine due in may!

Then alarm bells started to ring
If he had been vaccinated recently then surely his next vaccine would be due a year later!
When I queried this she said that it runs out in may.
I then said could I have a copy of the vaccinations to show my vet
She then said no I can't because she actually vaccinate her rabbits herself!!

I haven't heard of that before, surely she would need to go to the vets to get them vaccinated.

Yes, some breeders vaccinate their rabbits themselves but this is generally discouraged by vets as it's possible they're using expired vaccines or administering it wrong. That doesn't mean that's necessarily the case here, but you just don't get the guarantee. You also don't get the vaccination card to prove they've had it, as you've found.

The boosters are usually every 12 months but I think they are sometimes done every 6 months so that would make sense if the rabbit is 6 months old (born in October) and vaccinated at 5 weeks old (in November). But clarify it with the seller.

Clarify with the breeder exactly which vaccines she used, the brand names i.e. Nobivac.

There's a brand new triple vaccine that's annual, previously it was one vaccine for Myxi & VHD1 and a separate one for VHD2. I'm not sure a breeder would be able to get hold of the new triple vaccine as it's only rolled out within the last year.

Try and get the brand of the vaccines this breeder has used and the date of administering it. There are some types that can be done every 6 months, especially if the rabbit's are in a high risk environment. Then at least you can pass the details on to your vet.
