Our little guinea pig died today

I hope this isn’t crazy indulgent - it probably is considering people have written the above thread title about their family member.
But I just feel stupidly upset. He’d been in a Pet Shop for 2 weeks while we went away for half term. Picked him up Thursday; rushing around everywhere.

Went to put him outside Friday & he wasn’t well at all. Not as feisty as usual. Took him to vet. She said to monitor him. He didn’t seem right again today. Rang a different vet (felt fobbed off on Friday) by the time I took him to the vet he was very floppy & died Either on the way or there.

DD was holding him. What is the matter with me when there are humans suffering throughout the world, being all upset over a guinea pig?

Because guinea pigs worm their little way into your heart as they are the most amazing little creatures Thanks sorry for your loss Sad

You're allowed to be sad about loosing your guinea pig, poor little thing.

You can be worried/sad about human suffering and still mourn the loss of a much loved pet, don't feel bad about that!

Thank you. I just keep thinking about him going into the corner of the cage. I wish I’d put him in their little house so that he had the comfort of a roof over his head. There’s one left now: all on his own.

Human relationships are quite different from the way you
can feel about guinea pigs, who are uncomplicated, furry, fun, greedy little darlings.

Sorry to hear about this, I had guinea pigs as a child and really loved them and their little personalities. The death of any pet is very sad, it doesn't matter what else is happening in the world, your feeling of loss is very real. Flowers for you and your DD.

Awww poor little thing and poor dd. I bet she was upset bless her heart. At least you gave him a lovely home. I had a gerbil that I grew very fond of that became ill and died. We buried him in an old sewing box in the garden. Flowers

You are absolutely allowed to be upset over your pet, they're very much part of the family. We had two of the little cuddle bundles for about five years before one died last year and the other sadly died at Easter, so sad. Sorry for your loss

So sorry for your loss .They are the sweetest little pets and I can totally understand why you are upset.💐

Sorry for your loss. Guinea Pigs are little critters that just worm their way into your Heart 💔

It is sad when they die and often there's no reason you can pinpoint . The phrase "Well To Dead" is well known about piggies .
Sadly some Vets are not Cavy Savvy . Guinea Pigs are exotics . I have unfortunately met Vets who think they are annoying scraps of noisy fur . And some who relish and revere the Piggie .

I have wept snotty buckets having a guinea-pig euthanised even though I knew it was the right thing .
It does not get easier .
Our last girl was indoors , old lady , her cagemate and husband had both been euthanised on the 6 months before . She had a really manky eye ulcer , recovered , then after he Vet confirmed she had healed and her sight was fine.......she died 3 days later !

They are complex, greedy , thick as mince but lovely with it , gentle , intriguing little mammals that you miss like blazes when they die .

You'd have to have a heart of stone not to feel like this .

You can still be upset about a pet dying when there is covid and stuff going on. Guinea pigs are gorgeous pets and they do get into your affections a lot, I've been in floods of tears when we've had guinea pigs die (we've had 9).
