Guinea Pigs - how much veg?

I'm looking for advice on how much veg to feed guinea pigs. I've been giving them a teacup sized portion daily in addition to nuggets and a constant supply of hay. But, a vet told me this week that veg is a treat and should only be given once or twice a week. Am I overfeeding them?!

Awww, that's cute.

Our piggies are a pain when it comes to vegetables - unless it's kale they turn their noses up and I find half eaten apples, orange peel, bananas and even carrot in the cage. Yet they hear the kitchen door and go crazy squeaking at me and waiting by the bars, they are disappointed often because it's obviously not kale every single time. Unless it's green and leafy they aren't bothered, though they hoovered up the brown mountain ash leaves yesterday; they aren't going to get those year round though Shock

They are odd little piggies all round, given that we hand reared them you'd think they would be really tame but they aren't, they hate being picked up to come out but when out they love it; one wheeks for joy when he's stroked, the other is more reticent but sits still and humours us until he's had enough and then he bites. When they were tiny they were handled a lot of course because we were hand feeding them and then they'd follow us along the cage as we walked down it.

They love to find a random fallen leaf and hoover it up before you can check it's safe for them Shock . GP2 loved the willow leaves from NDN tree .

I used to love the Waitrose reduced section, really good prices and the pigs could try something new . They loved Cavelo Nero , theu sometimes had it chopped or mixed . I think its like a spinach/kale hybrid . Much preferred than kale but an occasional treat .
Pea shoots
Beetroot salad (raw beetroot) in a mix
Mini peppers (red /yellow/orange)
Organic celery was the leafiest -often on sale as it looked a bit weedy
And they did bags of salad mixes that were eat one now / one later .

It's funny how some guinea-pigs like to re write the books Grin
Our GP5 was a bit toothy but we don't think she was handled much before . Though her cagemate was as mellow as can be .

GP3 (big Rex boar) would travel down to the Pighouse with his wives in a big plastic crate (it was knee height with a locking lid - it had air holes too)
If we weren't quick enough he went up on his hind legs and leapt out . Luckily we always put the box on the floor , we never guessed he'd be capable of the athletics

I go out and pick the leaves from the mountain ash for them, when we put them out they stay in the run as our new neighbours have three dogs and I'm concerned in case the GPs find a way into their garden, as they don't like being picked up it'd be impossible to find them.
