Guinea pigs suddenly quiet and odd

All 3 of them. Not eating much today. Just hiding away sleeping. They declined spinach at tea time but did have a bit of cucumber.
Any ideas?

Are they indoor piggies, or outside ? Could they have had a fright, such as a fox trying to get in ?

BloodyBollockingHell · 04/10/2020 18:15

Moved them indoors a couple of weeks ago. No change in food/hay - same bag for the last couple of weeks. No surprises.

They are probably using up fewer calories per day now they are inside in the warm than they would have been outside.
Maybe they aren't hungry.

BloodyBollockingHell · 04/10/2020 18:29

Could be. But they are always hungry!

(I have horrible pet health type anxiety. I hate the feeling. Lost my dog a couple of weeks ago and not coping well with it inside)

If they're indoors are they too hot ? Guineas are very temperature sensitive . Too cold and they huddle themselves away in the hay .
Too warm and they'll sprawl out .
Keep a close watch they can suffer heatstroke .
Is there a draught they don;t want to sit in.
Or an air freshener plug in they don't like ?

Are they peeing and poohing ?
Maybe they just don't like spinach but the cucumber was an acceptable substitute .

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/10/2020 21:26

Flowers about the dog .
Not sure how the guinea-pigs would feel about the dog being no longer there . Guinea-pigs are usually stomachs on legs .
I don;r think they even pick up on their owners vibes TBH

( I love guinea-pigs but they are not the sharpest tools in the shed !)

BloodyBollockingHell · 04/10/2020 21:27

Not hot, no heating on yet. No real droughts. No plug ins. No change in cleaning things, no plug ins. Poos seem normal - I cleaned them out this morning so can see they’ve been since.
They love spinach - they’d normally sell their pig grandmothers for it. It’s very odd.

They really are just fat tums on legs and I don’t think they’ve noticed the lack of dog. Just quieter than usual. Not bouncing around when chopping veg like usual.

Have you checked their water bottle to make sure it's not blocked?

RandomMess · 04/10/2020 21:33

Vets tomorrow sounds very odd.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/10/2020 22:04

My pigs rarely drank water they got more than enough water from veg .
But I know they rejected some foods that they usually liked .

I bought carrots that they wouldn't touch , bought from another shop they inhaled them.

Can you try bribing them with some fresh cut grass and dandleions ? Rinse well and let it get to room temperature .

Usually when one piggie is ill their cagemates either leave it in peace or swarm round to protect it .
It is strange that they;re all so quiet .

gingerbreadfox · 04/10/2020 22:13

Agree with the water bottle suggestion... sometimes the ball can get stuck too high up so they can't drink.

May be a stupid suggestion but has the spinach gone off? My pigs used to refuse some foods if they had spoilt.

Is there something that may have spooked them? Loud noise or something shiney/reflective or flashing that is scaring them in the room?

BloodyBollockingHell · 05/10/2020 07:00

Business as usual this morning. Thanks for suggestions. I wonder if it was on the turn.

I am insane though.

Phew so pleased to read they're back to their chatty ways!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/10/2020 18:45

Mad Cavy Slave Wink

Insanity is a well known side effect of Guinea-Pig Keeping.

Sounds like the little perishers were being judgey about the spiniach.
Though one of th first signs of them being ill is stopping eating .
I've found some of my pigs deceased with food in their mouths ! They literally DO Live to Eat Grin

MJMG2015 · 05/10/2020 18:51

@BloodyBollockingHell

Glad to hear they're brighter today
You do realise you broke the posting rules though?

No photos 😳

😊anything for a piggy pic!

🌷sorry about your dog. Absolutely heart breaking isn't it.

BloodyBollockingHell · 05/10/2020 20:10

They’ve been really tetchy all day. Lots of chuntering and shouting at each other. Hormones maybe?

They are so lovely ! Glad they are ok.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/10/2020 18:35

Are they 3 sows? Could be in season?

When I kept 2 sows together they came into season within a day of each othee and were evil tempered (and stronger smelling pee) for 36 hours ....then fine .

Our boar (GP3 then GP6 who were husbands 1 then 2 ) thought "Wayhay my luck is in here" ......got the sharp ends of their elbows ]grin]

GP3 and GP6 were castrated , but they still thought they are "It" .
