Guinea pig tangled fur

I'm the proud, and fairly new, owner of 2 beautiful Guineas.

One of them has very long fur which sort of cascades down at the back. I've noticed he's had a few really tangled bits recently. I've cut out the tangles with scissors but wondered if that was the right thing to do. The person we got them from said to groom them with your hand rather than a brush.

Anyone else with this issue?

Unless you plan to show your piggies , just keep the fur round their bum trimmed , so much easier for them not to have wee matted fur .
We had a couple of piggies with longer fur at the rump.
If they got clumpy fur , we rubbed a bit of neat shampoo to soften it , bum dip, trim away the worst (hold the fur between forefinger/middle finger and keep your fingers between the scissors and their skin) .
We rubbed a bit of coconut oil in then used a baby comb.

I had one Peruvian years ago (Disclaimer , I didn't know till her fur grew....and grew Grin ) She was fine to comb, but I kept her fur floor length, not flowing mop.

Just do a bit of combing a day , they;ll get used to it. But keep an eye on them, dirty fur is a magnet for FlyStrike (and guinea-pigs , Bless them, are manky . Part of their charm )

Now : Pigtures ? You know The Rules Wink

Basically what the above poster said. We’ve had plenty of GPS over the years but the long haired ones are definitely a bit high maintenance. We used to trim carefully any longer hair and clumps. Groom as much as we could and several baths each year alongside a haircut. Xx

Thank you both, that's helpful. I'll keep him trimmed then.
Will see if I can work out how to post a picture........

Oooo beautiful!

I think the front one is a Coronet!
Gorgeous, names?
Yep you have to keep on top of the trimming, look out for any hay etc forming a clump, because it gets matted.
We used to put ours in a washing up bowl in the sink for baths.

Thank you!

We're new to piggies but just loving them. Such interesting little creatures.

Rupert is the long haired one. Coffee is the crazy hairstyle at the back.

I had a gorgeous boy who had - what shall I call it........? A bit of a personal problem.

Regular baths with a spot of Swarfega really helped. It breaks down the grease and doesn't ruin their skin.

Because they're worth it!
