Do I need to wash my guinea pigs?

I have seen references elsewhere and photos of guinea pigs being bathed, but I have not yet done such a thing. Do I need to bath them? Mine seem clean enough and unsmelly. I can’t imagine either of them would enjoy the experience. But should I be doing it, and if so how often?

No it really isnt great for them to be bathed unless they are particularly dirty or have a condition that means they need it. They clean themselves so its best to leave it be!

They generally don't need bathing. I've done it a couple of times when one of mine was ill & had diahorrea but certainly wouldn't do it regularly. They're pretty clean, self sufficient little animals.

Thank you. I thought they seemed pretty self cleaning. My sow gets a bit stinky when she's in heat but it never lasts long.

Ours get washed for weddings ( to make them smell neutral) if they'te manky (long pissed on fur or illness making them loose- and that's just a 'bumdip' ) or in the case of a rowing pair (like when it was a hot May Bank holiday and our young boar decided to harass the older one) to give them chill out time .
We could almost hear them say
"What the Jeff?"

"Your fault"

We gave our GP7 a bath recently , she's quite long haired so she had a shampoo and trim.
She wasn't in the least bit grateful !

In general mine are bathed a couple of times a year - unless there is a pressing need .
Sadie sometimes goes green in places (mostly white haired) when over enthusiastically eating juicy parsley or grass and so gets a dab wash. Although recently she dyed herself blueberry blue around her mouth and chin when DH decided she needed huge M&S blueberries to 'get her over' a visit to the vets he doesn't buy me M&S blueberries

Only if poorly and need a clean.

But mine do enjoy "swimming" in a shallow tray of water when it's really hot.

We have texel guinea pigs - long haired and they can get a bit whiffy as they are low riders. We bath them with Gorgeous Guineas lice and easy shampoo but I don't think I would bother if they were short hair and fragrant.
