guinea pig hutch height

We are in the middle of building an indoor hutch for new guinea pigs. We haven't had them before. The front of the hutch is 10 inches tall. I did look online before we started to find what height it needed to be and thought 10 inches was fine, but having nearly finished the hutch, I'm now worried that it isn't high enough. The hutch will be on a table so it's really important they can't get out. I think what I'm worried about is that although it's 10 inches, we could lose an inch with bedding etc, so in reality it may be more like 9 inches high.

Obviously we won't be placing things up to the edge that they might be able to climb on (and then out).

Does this sound ok? Can someone either reassure me that it's fine, or tell me now (before it's finished...), that we need to change it?

Thanks!

I think it needs to be higher! A good 18/20 inches high is about right. I hope you can still make some amendments!

Nowhere near tall enough. GP love to jump and climb (mine do anyway) so I'd say you need at least double that height.

What are the other dimensions?

Other dimensions are 150 x 78cm, with a 'loft' area that runs all the way along the back.

They shouldn't be able to climb it because the sides and back are solid wood and the front is a sheet of perspex, so there's nothing for them to get a grip on. I was following some ideas that I'd found by googling how to build a diy hutch and had decided on measurements from a mix of ideas that other people had built - all of which seemed to be saying 8-10 inches was fine. There is scope to add a bit more height to the front, which is the lowest part, as I can box in the perspex sheet (yet to be attached).

I've just seen this large amount of cube storage on Facebook -- it's in Spalding (no, it's not mine) but might be useful for someone building a GP pen?
