Our guinea pig just died

She was 4 and she was was gorgeous. I'm so upset.

She went downhill really quickly, and despite visits to the vet and hourly syringe feeding, we couldn't save her. DS1 is going to be devastated when he gets home from school.

Has anyone got any tips on how to help our other guinea pig now she's on her own? They've been together all their life, so I'm a bit worried about her.

Lots of cuddles? Anything else?

I am so sorry to hear this.

If you can, I'd get a couple of baby females for company. If you get two it means they can play together (which your older one may not feel up to do herself) but means she still gets piggy company.

Has she seen her sister's body? It will help her understand if she can say goodbye.

Hi time, thank you.

She did see her sister's body, so I'm hoping she will understand. She's not been quite herself since Sunday either, so I think she sensed that something was wrong. (Hopefully she's not sick too! - I am keeping a very close eye on her!)

I'm not sure we want to go down the route of more guinea pigs, but we'll see. The vet said to maybe wait a few weeks if we were thinking of it, so that gives us a little time to think it over.

Meetie, so sorry to hear this. Our second pig, Gel, 4 and gorgeous too, just died last night that's why I came on to MN and saw your post.
She was part of a pair that we got 4 years ago and her sister died 2.5 years ago. The other one was the alpha female and we wondered how Gel would cope but she did just fine and seemed to thrive.
I would say don't rush - wait a bit and see how she copes because every pig will be different.
Best wishes
