Budgie chat and tips!

Hi! Smile

I'm struggling to tame mine, they'll eat if I hold food in my fingers but won't step on my finger to come and get food on my hand. I'm hoping they will eventually. They seem to like it when I go and say hello as they fluff up!

How long have you had yours?

Couple of months now, started off with just one, Abby the yellow girl( my dd named them!)
Was doing well tameing her then she was played videos of talking boy budgies and got upset so we ended up with blue boy Harry!
The it got hard as they bonded together.

loveyoutothemoon · 08/05/2018 19:40

Sounds like they keep each other happy.

Mine are quite fussy eaters, the only fruit they'll eat is apples!

Mine only like strawberries or fancy salad!
Oh and there mad for corn on the cob😆
Harry is way more chatty than Abbie , he actually twitters at her while he's sleeping!.
She does remember some training... after they have had there out of cage time I hold a perch and say step up and she does, then I put her in cage , for harry I say bedtime and he flies in. He won't do step up . Neither will perch on finger.

I haven't tried with strawberries yet, and corn on the cob-that sounds interesting! Do yours come out of their cage willingly? My 2 out of 3 won't venture out yet...I'm hoping they will at some point.

Hi yes they do ... they fly around like mini aeroplanes 😆
How long have you had yours?
Was about 8 weeks before mine just came out when I opened cage door .
You need to make sure you can get them back in first.
Plus you must cover windows or draw curtains as they literally fly bang into them and can hurt themselves.

yellowDahlia · 09/05/2018 12:31

Ok...you've got my interest! DDs are 11 and 8 and keen on an 'indoor' pet (and so am I!) - we already keep chickens so familiar with bird care.

Dogs/cats are out for now for various reasons and I am not interested in small furries - but perhaps budgies??

I have questions though - where do you get them? I assume Gumtree is bad and breeders are best? Could I keep them in a corner of the living/dining room? Don't they poo everywhere when they're flying around and how do people deal with that? Smells? I'm sure I'll think of more... Grin

ilovejeffgoldblum · 09/05/2018 12:48

Hi breeder or dare I say it.... pet shop! , yes to lounge , they don't really smell at all really not like big parrots .
Poo very small just wipe up little spots your good to go.
I use special wipes called poop off !😉

Thanks jeff and apologies to the OP for the shameless thread hijack! Blush. I hope my questions will prompt more budgie chat and tips though!

loveyoutothemoon · 09/05/2018 17:17

I've had mine about 3 weeks. Only one of them is tame, will perch on finger, come out of cage and fly a bit! Got them from a breeder off the internet.

Aww new babies then 🤗 . Give it time and you'll be singing to them when no ones around ( I also do bobbing , they like it!).

I have one. He is 14. I got him when he was 3, from an old lady loving into a home. She'd put a little advert up In Sainsbury's.

Love him. Such a character.

When I moved out of home properly at 24, I was so worried that he was going to be lonely that I bought him a little mate. She was really over-bearing towards him (nicked his favourite perch, would 'shout' at him all the time) but he loved her. She had designs on baby-making a couple of times but he'd just give her a chaste peck on the cheek and go and play with his toys Grin

She died last month. That budgie is now as happy as a clam. Up with the lark, playing all day, chatting to the birds out the window, honestly, he just adores being alive.

I was worried he'd pine and die of a broken heart Grin

Dmil has a budgie. Cute wee thing. Won't eat anything but seed, has the run (fly?) of the house, chats away and loves company.

loveyoutothemoon · 10/05/2018 17:21

Wow 14! That's amazing.

Some good news-my other two stepped onto my hand today, been trying for ages. Teased them with grass (their favourite).

I agree, their poop isn't that messy. It's quite small and dry. Had a few mishaps on the wallpaper lol but that was before I moved the cage away from the wall!!
