Millie has eye ointment

Millie has been to the vet today. I noticed her eye was watering a lot last night. We noticed her left eye had gone a bit dull before Christmas. We think she has lost her sight in that eye and its the eye that is watering. My guess is she has poked it on hay.

Vet had a student vet with her. Poor Millie is such a useful teaching tool so many ailments for him to inspect - fluid retention, massive bum lump, blind eye, watery eye.

As soon as she could, Millie hid in her blanket and come out only once we were home. Lucky I'd gone to Marks & Spencer for naice salad leaves.

Got to put ointment in twice a day for a week

Millie doesn't like you to be bored does she! Poor girl, hope she's behaving about her drops. I had to give eye drops to old Scruffypig (I think he was nearly blind) and he didn't like it.

That poor student vet probably hadn't realised the variety of ailments pigs could get until they met Millie. Hopefully she didn't put him off.

@Fernie. Millie is not being a good girl. She flicks her head and I end up wearing the ointment.

Student vet, relished the opportunity to inspect Millie! Definitely not put off. Not even when I suggested Millie go all G-Force on him and poo on his hand. Of all the times Millie is generous with her poo, she chose this time to hold on.

Poor Millie Sad and yes they never seem to pooh/pee/bite to order little gits

Our pigs get 'haypoke' as they so quaintly call it , I arm myself with non fluffy sterile gauze and a soloution of boiled water +salt left to cool.

I had a mad search online when Bert had a haypoke , slight clouding on his eyeball round his eye (the bit that should be white when you pull the lid back ) was red .

Read up Peter Gurney (Cavy Guru) who wrote that by the time it goes opaque the eye is healing but I was worried about his red bit .
DD and I did the intensive bathing, took away his hay and gave him a box to sleep in next to his girls (so he didn't feel too deprived) and planned to whisk him off to The Guinea Vet.
Thankfully he turned it around within hours and we kept a close check.

GP7 had a bit of hay stuck on Tuesday (did the eyewash bit) and cleared a piece of ReadiGrass. I think she was trying to wash it herself (or GP8 might have helped) she had the 'milky' tears.

When there's another piggie they help the cagemate out to wash the poorly eye (that piggie pooh spit must be some guinea healing elixer Envy

Hold out for constant supplies of N&S salad Millie Wink but please, keep you head still and let your eye be treated.

In my early days of piggie slavery we had a very bad tempered pig - Squeak - who took no messing about or nonsense from anyone. DH used to wear thick motorcyclist gloves to lift her out of the hutch. And as 70 has previously remarked, we knew why she was in rescue Grin

Developed limp, went to see a cocky local vet who dismissed my warning to watch his hands with 'I am very experienced with guinea pigs'.
His howl of pain could be heard across the East Midlands when she sunk her teeth in hard into his finger and held on GrinGrin

I like to think she was a great judge of character and was simply putting him in his place.
We moved vets.

Update: Millie's eye got better Grin

We are now counting down the days until she is officially 7 years old.

She will definitely have a pot of parsley for her birthday but what else?
I still have time to order some treats from Amazon. What should I get? Smile
