Guinea pig has died

Just came to get my guinea pigs out for their evening run around and found Johnny dead in the cage. I can’t believe it! He is less than a year old and last night was active and eating fine. I don’t no what happened. I am heartbroken.

I also don’t no what to do now with Noah (Johnny’s brother) as he is only a year old and I don’t want him to live a long life alone. How easy is it to introduce a new Guinea pig to an older pig? I want him to have a friend but don’t want to rush fighting.

Oh so sorry for your loss, I grew up with Guinea pigs so l have a major soft spot for the little guys. I always found introducing a baby boy guinea pig to the older male guinea pig was the best bet. I did this a few time and they had a close relationship and bonded well and the adult male kind of had a father type close relationship the little one; it was cute. The little one grew up and they never fought as adults as had bonded. If you introduce an adult male they will most certainly fight.

I've always found I producing 2 babies slowly to 1 male works well (have been doing this with my brood for the last 10yrs) I split their cage in 2 upstairs/downstairs so they could hear each other and then put them in runs side by side etc until they are happy with each other.

It's a shock when they die young for no apparent reason (I lost a baby of 6 months on bonfire night, through shock I think) my eldest passed away at 10yrs old and happily accepted others when his friend passed away at a more normal age.

I am really sorry to hear about your guinea pig, I was just coming on to say my daughter has found her eldest boy has died this morning.

He was old, and has a 1 year old room mate. I had the room mate neutured a few months ago with the aim of putting him in with our 3 girls (2 years old and 18 months old) as and when the eldest went.

The boys have always lived next to the girls so well used to their sounds etc, but I haven't attempted to put them in together to see how they get on. That will be today (and likely the next fortnights) mission

Good luck x

Sorry for your loss. I had two Guinea pigs a few years back and one died after the other and it's just heartbreaking.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Guinea pig :(

As others have stated, younger piggies are better introduced to your boy as they won't be seen as a threat. Or you could always get your boy neutered and get him one or two female companions. :)
