One of my pigs died during the night

She was three. Seemed in perfect health. Didn't notice when I got up (didn't have my glasses on) but when I went back in for their bowl I noticed her sister desperately licking her face Sad.

Have already made enquiries for another, as I don't want her sister to be on her own for too long, but, unfortunately, it's not that easy where I live. I'll keep my fingers crossed, and in the meantime give her lots of hugs and attention (which she won't be too thrilled about, but never mind). Considered bringing her into the office today (wouldn't be the first time I've taken a wee furry in with me) but she attacked breakfast with vigour so I think she's ok.

RIP Polly xxx

Aww Sad
Sometimes they just Go with no prior warning (nice for them but not for their cagemate or owner)
Her sister has spent some time with her body (important so they can accept it)
Is she indoors?
Two of our boars were alone for 6 days when their respective roomies died they were very subdued but perked up with a new cagemate. (Also gives you a chance to suss out if there was anything contagious too)

[shamorock] < clover for your piggie

Shamrock < clover tsk

Thanks, 70.

Yes, her sister spent time with her. Presume Polly died sometime during the night. It was her sister licking her furiously which made me realise she had gone. Have asked someone at the local vets if she knows of any nearby and she said she'll make enquiries for me. I'm not terribly hopeful since I live a long way from anywhere and guineas don't seem to be popular up here, but we'll see. Other than that my options are a 200 mile round trip to P@H (far from ideal) or waiting til the end of the month when DP travels near to the breeder I got these two from and see if she's got any I can have.

RIP Polly.
Sorry to hear this has happened as 70 said sometimes they do just die for no apparent reason
At least your other pig 'knows'

Last time we had a death we had to wait a few days to find a new friend - we were on holiday with the piggies and couldn't find a local rescue and net for finding decent pet shop took a week. So Mollie had lots if cuddles and one to one time. We also gave her a small teddy to lie against and a rolled pair of DH's socks.
She did get pretty miserable and depressed tho. Perked up really quickly when we found Sadie.

RIP Polly Sad

I hope her sister gets an extra bit of fuss today. Sorry for your loss Flowers

EastMidsGPs · 12/08/2017 13:46

DH justreminded me, Mollie bit holes in the socks, so perhaps not socks (unless they belong to someone else Wink)

So sorry to hear this. We lost one of ours this week and it's just so sad.

At least she didn't suffer and I'm sure you gave her a really happy life. Good luck with finding another. Flowers
