How are The SuperFurryAnimals coping in the cold weather?

Mine are in today , it was freezing, snow forecast again after last night.

Ours were in over New Year (DD was looking after them and GP5 was unwell) then we put them back out in the Pighouse by day. (I was the one tottering down at 6.30 to put their fresh bedding and snugglepads in their hayboxes then putting their little heater on for 20 minutes to take the chill off)

Today they've been whittering (like a box of racing pigeons) for me to get them food. So I cut some grass, let it warm a bit indoors and they're delighted , Bless them Grin

So how to appease these Judgey Little Mammals?

atheistmantis - don't worry, building the cage is easy (though I'm intruiged by what you mean by "a lift" - will it be electric operated?).

I confused the issue by originally buiding mine for two groups of rabbits (was unsure whether one was male or not) so there was a divider down the middle. I opened it up so that they can run all the way around, but there's still a divide for much of the way which means one side of it is basically inaccessible to clean (part of it is under a table, the other has a second storey above, and is too near the end of the shed to be able to get a broom very far along.

As far as I understand they were originally designed for guineas, and are far more suited to them, being as how they don't need nearly as much exercise especially up the way (ie jumping) and are less inclined to try to escape if there's food around. I did go rather OTT at first and used cable-ties everywhere, but the joins you get with the sheets are really good and do keep them together well. Too well, really, as they are difficult to get apart for cleaning (as I said, I have a complicated set-up with lots of various hidey-holes).

The easiest was to set it up would be to have it as a single layer, with no roof (possible for guineas) or, failing that, use chicken wire over the top. Once the sections are joined together they are hard to separate. If you are going to have to open sections regularly I suggest using D-clips to hold them together.

Mine is happy but he lives indoors anyway (elderly lone boar, we lost his cage mate last year). I can hear him happily throwing his ball around (he has a jingly ball with a bell inside that he likes to fling about the place).

Oops, autocorrect changed loft to lift cos I don't make typing mishtakes
I'm glad it's not hard, thanks .
We don't have a lid on the existing cage but one now climbs on the house thanks Ds for teaching him so the loft will go over the house to stop that.

Yep she certainly looks settled !!!

That's one gorgeous little piggie sleeping.

The purple pigs are doing fine. Mr pig lost some weight and had his teeth filed last week. He was being syringe fed until a couple of days ago when he started gaining 40g a day and eating like he's never eaten before. The Mrs pig with the kidney trouble is doing amazingly well. We almost had her euthanised just before Christmas when she had a mini stroke but she's now completely recovered from that. The vet can't quite understand how she's not dead given her kidney function is so dreadful but she's always running around, squeaking and generally cheery. I know she won't be around forever but it's great to see her so well. The other Mrs pigs are gleaming with health and bloody fat at 1.2kg each.

They're currently running around the kitchen in a little four pig train given that it's way too cold here to go out.

😂😂

That's great news Purple.
Moll has sort of got over her chest infection (it's her metacam addiction we need to resolve nowSmile) but she grunts now when she runs and exerts herself. Vet thinks this will stay with her and whilst she is fat, happy, eating, weeing and pooing we'll just keep an eye on her. Hope she manages to survive to play outside again.

Mochasmumma · 29/01/2017 14:34

Our old man Mac has grunted and snuffled since his URI EastMids and that was 4 years ago. He's now 6 and shows no signs of flagging so there's definitely hope :)

As you can see it's a messy piggy - the cage had just been restocked!

EastMidsGPs · 30/01/2017 21:05

We needed hay cookies yesterday Pound shop didn't have any so called in at P@H.
A mum, grandma and boy of about 9 were adopting a loan girl piggie from the adoption section. A lovely chocolate brown pig. The little boy sat on the floor stroking and getting to know his new friend, he was so gentle and listened intently to what the keeper was telling him.
I asked him what he was going to call his new pet and he indignantly told me she already has a name!
I thanked mum and gran for rescuing her, when we walked to the car, they were nearby with the child on the back seat very carefully holding the pet carry box.
I hope yesterday one lucky pig found her forever home and is today beginning a life of love and cuddles 🐹

EastMidsGPs · 30/01/2017 21:06

Lone not loan

atheistmantis · 31/01/2017 05:18
