Is our hamster dying?

Our 18month old Syrian male hamster woke up this morning with a sticky closed eye and a squeaky cough. Took him the vets who gave him oral antibiotics and ointment for his eye. She said he seemed to have a respiratory infection. He seemed to recover a little but now is shuffling around in circles and hardly eating. He ate a bit of cucumber but that's it. He looks confused in his cage like he's not sure where to go.

Do these all signs mean he's about to pop his clogs? What else do they do to signal impending death? He doesn't seem to want to snuggle into his usual bedding area. Feel I need to know so as to prepare the kids.
