Hamster very wobbly

This evening we found dd2's hamster very wobbly. She turned 2 a couple of weeks ago. We got her out and cleaned her eyes up as they were sticky and she couldn't open them. I held the water bottle for her and she drank. She wasn't interested in food, but shoved a little in her pouch.

Thinking back she has been a little odd for the past few days. She hasn't been in her wheel and kept getting up in the daytime which she rarely does. However, she has been eating and drinking, so I didn't think too much about it at the time.

When we put her on the floor she slowly went round and round in circles for a bit and was very unsteady. It's the end isn't it? If she's still with us tomorrow I'll take her to the vet. She's such a lovely hamster...much nicer than dd1's vampire of a hamster. Sad

She's still with us, but only just. She had moved across the cage and was freezing. She is barely breathing. I have put her in an old sock to keep her warm, but she has obviously not got long. What do I do? It's a half hour walk to the vet and I'm worried that will be very stressful for her in this state. Is it best to leave her wrapped up in her bed?

We've had 2 other hamsters. One lived to 3.5 - we inherited her from friends moving abroad - and the other lived to be 4 months. They both died in their beds when they had seemed fine the night before.

awwww Sad

I think if I was a hamster I'd prefer to die at home rather than get carried to the vets

(I feel your pain though. Our hamster is two and a bit and getting doddery)

I left her wrapped up in her bed and she died at about 11am. Sad

Awww I'm sorry

I'm sure you did the right thing

I wish someone would breed a megahamster that lasts as long as, say, a guinea pig. Two years isn't enough Sad
