Woodshavings EVERYWHERE!

Our new gerbils seen very happy with their cage BUT argh the sawdust!

Does anyone have a cage like this that isn't surrounded by woodshavings every time the gerbils are digging (which is every time they are awake).

I haven't got gerbils but when I used wood shavings for my hamster she always used to get shavings everywhere. I've switched to carefresh now which I find much better and cleaner.

Maybe try a different bedding?

Hi. Might be an idea. Not sure if they can tunnel in it though. I will look into it thanks

I've never used care fresh but if you added some hay and some cardboard tubes etc they should be able to burrow.

I have that exact cage too......and the mess Grin But they are very happy and seem to delight in chucking out loads more as soon as the hoover has gone away!

Sounds like a plan. Although I may need to substitute the hay for something else as I am allergic to it.
They are crazy at shredding cardboard and using that. Can also try to bury some cardboard tubes to save them from the little teeth.
Are they supposed to dig and tunnel in a purposeful manner? At the moment (they are only babies) they seem to dig with little purpose except a big hole. Occasionally they do a lovely tunnel but it gets destroyed in the next bout of frantic digging.

Brilliant to watch!

Yes Utah it really looks like they are doing it on purpose at times. Usually just after I have swept up the last lot!
