....and tell me about rats as pets. DS has almost finished the month of oet care he had to do in order to get his own pet. He wants rats (a pair).

I'm fine with that, but what will we need?

All advice welcomed.

I know this is an old thread but please can I pick your brains as to which is the best litter for rats? We use the paper pellets at the moment but wondering if there is better out there?

RattieOfCatan · 24/10/2015 10:00

Fencels: litter or substrate? For our one cage with substrate we tend to use the recycled news paper pellets, we had to use wood shavings with the big boys and preferred it to the paper pellets, much cheaper and it didn't make the boys ill!

We use cat litter for our litter trays usually, a standard cheapy one with low dust content.

We used megazorb, is that still considered hypoallergenic? Can buy it cheap from equine stuff type sellers, at least as cheap as wood shavings & similar products we found.

I use Biocatolet cat litter (I think that is how it's spelt). Not dusty. From the pet shops I've seen, they all seem to use it too.
