Rats - how much should I pay?

I'm looking for a pair of rats, have tried every pet rescue centre within our area and nobody has any. So my next choice is reputable breeders. How much should I expect to pay for a pair of kittens? They are not for show so won't be perfect. I haven't bought rats for about 20 years so I don't think they're £3 a pair any more... Grin

I have two rats that I bought recently £10 each. (Would you like them?? PM if you like!)

BlackNoSugar · 02/03/2015 22:10

Seriously? If you're anywhere near East of England I'd love details Smile

I'm picking up two rat kittens this weekend from a breeder and it's £25 for the pair :)

SnipSnapCrashCrack · 03/03/2015 08:04

pets at home is £17 a pair too but not as friendly to start with Smile

BlackNoSugar · 03/03/2015 14:43

Yeah, wanting to avoid PAH as they don't handle their pets. At all. Sad

OK so I'm looking at about £25 or so for a pair, plus silly £+++ for a cage and way too many accessories.

They're expensive Grin
Just received this cage www.littlepetwarehouse.co.uk/little-friends-narrow-hamster-cage-p-16514.html?osCsid=4gt2pnrt8n17rk54ilob1046v4 for the babies and it is huge!
And only £40, plenty big enough for two young rats. Mine will be going in to the big rat cage with my other rat when they are big enough to not squeeze through the bars Smile

The breeder I'm buying from is in Lowestoft if she would be any use to you? just realised you said east of England Smile

SnipSnapCrashCrack · 03/03/2015 21:56

Here's the list of breeders in the uk Smile they can charge up to £25 per rat so best to ask around Smile www.nfrs.org/NFRS_Breeders_List.pdf

BlackNoSugar · 03/03/2015 21:57

Oh snipsnap did you get yours from Lisa? She only has one buck left, I'm seriously considering it as she said she can get a cage-mate from another breeder.

They are Smile I'm getting topaz and a agouti bucks on Saturday, so so excited Grin DS can't wait either. What colour is the buck she had left (nosey) I would say get it from her if you can as they are well looked after and she handles them a lot Smile

MildredDreadful · 03/03/2015 22:08

Sorry BlackNoSugar I've only jus come back...I'm near Guildford in Surrey, so not especially close to you. You'd be welcome to have them though...they are my DS's but he's going away to college soon and it'll fall to me to look after them. Which I will, I quite like them, but I my hands full with work and stuff so I'd be happy to,regime them to someone who'd really love them. PM for any more info.

BlackNoSugar · 03/03/2015 22:13

I don't know the colour, just that she has one buck. I'm emailing her for more details, she sounds lovely Smile

Sorry Mildred you are too far away!

If it's the litter I think it is then you may be getting my rats brother Smile the baby's are 7 weeks tomorrow, I've been counting down for weeks Grin
From her Instagram images I think she's just had a litter of black and white babies which look lovely. If you ask her for a picture she will send you a link to her account to have a look. She does rat shows and judges them so she knows her stuff Smile

RattieofCatan · 03/03/2015 22:32

£15 each from my local breeder, I'm on the south coast, my breeder is amazing, I absolutely love rats from her as they're so friendly. I have three from her and three older ones (one rescue, two from another breeder).

I love love love rats :)

BlackNoSugar · 04/03/2015 11:39

SnipSnap he's not from the same litter, he's black with a white stripe Smile. I'm going to pick him and onother kitten up at the show on Saturday - is that where you're picking up from too?

(I was emailing Lisa and asked if he was from your litter, she may have said your first name... Grin)

I'm picking up half way on her way back to lowestoft (outs roughly where I live Blush) have fun at the show, I really want to go but my partners allergic to sawdust and rats so a whole room of them would be difficult. Fortunately he's happy to let me keep my boys. We had our male buck pts 2 weeks ago and the house feels a bit too quiet, other male started boggling as I came over last night which for a rat that doesn't show much affection was amazing Smile but he misses having a friend so counting down the days till Saturday, can you tell I'm excited Grin

BlackNoSugar · 04/03/2015 12:46

I'm allergic to sawdust too but will be loading up on allergy meds so I can go Smile I use recycled paper litter at home so no allergy issues there!

So sorry about your boy Sad it's a shame they don't live longer.

Have you tried the rat rescue network on Facebook? Loads of rats on there needing homes all over the country and some people will help transport.

RattieofCatan · 06/03/2015 07:27

Midori could you link me please? I'm not on that though it may be dangerous to my flat and the amount of space we have
I've been banned from getting more rats until some of ours pass over, I don't think that DP realises that our mischief are immortal ;)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/03/2015 15:01

Have you considered rehoming the DP Rattie?

My DD was allergic to our Rex guinea, but she now gets red patches from her guinea-pig.

I'm writing her rehoming advert as we speak (DD, not the guinea-pigs. They are far easier to manage and buy fewer shoes Wink )

RattieofCatan · 06/03/2015 15:24

I did 70, but as he is usually the one who remembers to refill their water and food every night I decided against it Wink

Oh your poor DD, I'd be devastated if I were allergic to any of my lovelies :(

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/03/2015 15:35

Ahh, I see you'd best keep him then Grin

DD doesn't get any respiratory reactions, just these weird red patches. No problem with GP1/GP2 it was GP3 and his coarse coat.
It doesn't stop her cuddling them Smile

RattieofCatan · 06/03/2015 17:34

To be fair, as much as I hate to admit it, DP is right, we can't have more rats at the moment. Between managing Ashi as a lone boy and the other 5 we have no time for any more at the moment :( Nibbles is two and noticeably looking old now which is why I'm "allowed" a new rat later this year, likely it'll be a silverfawn as my breeder will be breeding her pair of them so I'll either have one of the babies or take the Mummy in once her second litter is born but if a rescue comes up that might fit with my girls I'd be very tempted!

Do GP rexes have coarser coats than normal GPs then? Only our rex rat's fur is softer if anything so it's just interesting :)

Thanks Midori, I've joined!

BlackNoSugar · 08/03/2015 15:17

I have rats! Grin

Very shy at the moment but settling in nicely.
